New Plug-Ins From Alien Skin and Alpha PlugIns

Recently I wrote about the trend of plug-ins that only work in Adobe's products. Since then, I've received information on a new collection from Alien Skin as well as the details of some plug-ins that were new to me. I'll detail them all in this post. In a few days, I should also have some more plug-ins to talk about.

I've always been a big fan of Alien Skin's plug-ins. Not only do they create cool effects, they also are something that is useful on a regular basis. Today they announced a new collection called the Eye Candy Effects Collection. You can read the press release for all of the details. The short answer is that they've combined Eye Candy 5: Nature, Impact, and Textures with Xenofex 2 and Snap Art. That's five of their best sets of filters in one big package at a special discount. If you are going to be working with bitmaps, this is a package that will come in handy on a regular basis.

There was one part of the press release that was a little confusing to me. It states the image editors with which the package is compatible. Oddly, Corel PHOTO-PAINT is not listed. I asked the folks at Alien Skin about it and they claimed that one of the five filter sets is not compatible in their minds. I can tell you that I have all five of the sets included and I've never once had a problem with any of them in Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Even if you don't want or need all of the filters included in this package, you can buy them separately. Visit the Alien Skin Web site where you can download trial versions or purchase any of the packages.

Next up are a series of filters from Alpha Plugins. You can also purchase these individually or in one package at a nice discount. AlphaStrip lets you add a variety of geometric effects to your images. Digitalizer converts an image into text and/or HTML code. You've undoubtedly seen really cool pictures that were made out of text characters and this does the conversion for you. Engraver gives your images the look of various engraving patterns. For those of you doing laser engraving, this is a must-have plug-in. Fire creates a wide variety of flames and will even animate them for you. LensProIII distorts the selected area of an image as if you were looking at it through a special lens. IcePattern creates beautiful crystal and ice patterns in your image. You can get all six of the filters combined in the AlphaPhotoFX package. The last filter is RedEyes and it is a freebie.

Once again, I've tested all of the Alpha Plugins filters and they all work in Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Initially there was a problem with two of them and I passed the info on to the developer. One day later there were new versions that solved the problem.

We have a much longer list of plug-ins on the Web site. If you are looking to add a little more bang to your image editor, look over the list and find a few filters. In fact, many of the filters are completely free.
