Cool New Telecommunications Products
OK, normally we talk about things related to graphics. For this post I'm going to deviate a bit and talk about two upcoming telecommunications products. I think these are products that those of you running a business may want to know about. In fact, you might even find them useful at home.
I have a lot of college buddies who work for Sprint. They did not encourage me to write about these products and I'm getting nothing from Sprint to talk about them. I have been a Sprint customer for a long time and have been a happy customer most of the time. That's enough of the disclosure stuff, let's talk about the products.
First up is Xohm. It is the first major implementation of the WiMax technology. I live in an area where there is no cable TV and thus no cable Internet. DSL is available but the speeds are absolutely awful. So I've had a wireless antenna on my roof for about three and a half years which gives me pretty decent speed. I think on a good day it is around 900 kbps. Xohm will also pull in your Internet connection wirelessly. But it shouldn't require an antenna on the roof. Best of all, it will provide around 5 mbps or more than five times what I now get. Sure, it is a great way to connect your computers or your network to the Net. But it also could provide a way for personal media players, video cameras and other devices to connect. Think about your digital camera. What if you could push a button and have the pictures you've just taken in the field uploaded to your favorite photo-sharing Web site? That would be really cool. Other vendors may come out with similar products but it looks as if Sprint will be the first to market with Wimax devices.
The other product could save you a ton of money if you are always running out of cel phone minutes. AIRAVE puts a cell tower in your house. That means you always get a very strong signal. For example, people who attend our Boot Camps have discovered that Verizon has little or no signal in our area. Even better, AIRAVE will route your call across the Internet so that you are not charged for the minutes. The first thought that crossed my mind was taking the box with me when I travel internationally. Unfortunately there is a GPS in the box that only allows it to work in areas where Sprint already has service. I have heard that other carriers may have similar devices in the works.
I'm definitely excited about these two products as they will give me a very fast connection to the Web and a way to keep my cel phone bill under control. What do you think?
