CorelDRAW Users in Russia Grows By a Million

If you've followed the CorelDRAW community over the years, you probably know there is an active userbase in Russia. That was driven home to me many years ago when one of my CorelDRAW books was translated into Russian. There are some very talented artists and macro programmers in Russia already and today's announcement should only build upon that.

Corel announced today that the Russian Federal Agency of Education will receive one million licenses of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (no version was specified). This means that every single computer in primary and secondary schools will have a copy of CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT on it. The participating schools will also have access to licenses of Corel Paint Shop Pro XI and Corel Painter Essentials 3.

I don't expect this will have much of an immediate impact on Corel's bottom line. My guess is that the price paid is probably very low. More importantly, students in Russia will learn CorelDRAW. We can only hope that as they graduate and move into the working world that they continue to use CorelDRAW.

If Corel could forge similar agreements in Asia, they would soon have a huge userbase which is good for all of us. Winning over the North American market will be much more difficult, but building the userbase in Europe and Asia is a great start. Now I just need to start learning Russian so I can teach Boot Camps to all these new users!
