Hump Day Hardware: Canon PowerShot SX10 IS
When talking about digital cameras, there are all kinds of categories depending on the needs of the user. Today I'm going to cover consumer megazoom cameras, specifically the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS. If you are looking for a more compact point and shoot camera, I covered those a few months ago. I've also written about Digital SLR cameras for those wanting the best.Let's start with the basic specs. This is a 10 megapixel camera which is on the high end of consumer cameras. It has a 20X optical zoom (that isn't the lousy digital zoom which is a totally different thing). That is the equivalent of 28-560mm in a 35mm film camera. There is also a wide angle lens and an Optical Image Stabilizer. It uses an SD (or SDHC) card to store your images.
It certainly won't slip into your pocket, but it isn't as bulky as an SLR. It does not shoot RAW images. Digic 4 processing is included which improves the face detection. One thing I've always loved about this type of Canon is the flippable and twistable LCD screen. If you have to hold the camera over your head to get a shot, you can still use the LCD to compose the shot.
Amazon users have rated it 4.5 stars (out of 5) on average for 220 review. CNET Editors gave it 3.5 out of 5 and CNET users gave it 4 out of 5. For those who are looking for a very powerful consumer camera, you definitely want to give the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS a long look.
