Thursday Tip: Property Bar Calculator

The Property Bar in CorelDRAW can be used as a calculator. Let's say you have a rectangle already drawn and you want it to be 2.5 times wider and taller. In the width box on the Property Bar, *2.5 after the current width and press Enter. Repeat for the height. You can also add, subtract, divide and more. Give it a try and you'll be amazed at how useful this can be.

My favorite trick with this in mind is to use it when I am doing odd layouts like a trifold where the fractions of inches get to you. I create my fold marks on guidelines set a 1/3 page widths. If I need a margin guide, I select the guideline, CTRL D to duplicate and then set it to be the dimension -.25 and the duplicated guide pops dutifully into place. It makes setting guides and bleeds a piece of cake when they don't fall on the grid lines.
