The Cost of Free

Not a day goes by that I don't see a user saying something like "I need a macro that does this specific function, but it has to be free." Or maybe they say "I need a tutorial teaching me how to do this, but it has to be free." If you are reading this, you are probably using graphics software to produce something for customers. What if those customers came to you and said, "I need you to design me a shirt and it has to be free." Or maybe they say "I need some signage for my business but it has to be free." I'm guessing you would quickly show them the door.

When it comes to information and tools on the Internet, people expect them to be free. Why? It still takes someone or even a group of people to create whatever it is. Web hosting can get quite expensive for a large site.

I'm going to use the example of someone making free tutorials and explain why they aren't really free to you. Yes, you can access the tutorials at no cost. This "free" tutorial site hopes to make money from advertising on the site and they have gone so far as to violate the rules of the advertising network providing the ads. One of the tutorials was a seventeen minute long video. In talking to an expert on the subject, they felt a more productive method could be done in only two minutes. So not only does it take you longer to learn, it teaches you a very inefficient method. If you value your time, this isn't a recommended use of it. In the long run, is that tutorial really free to you? While you may not pay to watch the tutorial, you will pay over and over in the time you waste. We've all heard it before, you get what you pay for. Inefficient method equals inefficient use of time.

I hear complaints from some users that we charge for tutorials. The people creating these tutorials are working artists. They take time away from paying work to create the tutorial and we compensate them for their time. When we receive the content, the tutorial is prepared for publication. That takes my time. Then an editor works over the content. That costs money to pay the editor. If that tutorial saves you even ten minutes a day or it teaches you how to create a cool new effect, isn't it worth something to you? The good news is that I also hear quite often from people who purchase the tutorials about how it was well worth the money. Guess what? Over 80% of the tutorials on our site are free. When authors create a premium tutorial, we charge a small amount for it. Typically the cost is between $5 and $10. If you want the authors to keep creating this high-quality content, I encourage you to support your own learning and support the creators by purchasing the tutorials that address your needs. If you find artwork or a macro that would help you, consider purchasing it and supporting the creators.

Yes, we have advertising on our site. No, it doesn't come close to supporting the cost of everything we provide to users. Yes, we sell products from which we receive a commission. While those earnings are very much appreciated, they don't pay all the bills either. We also offer training products and classes that have a cost to them. We make sure that the value delivered far exceeds the cost.

If you only support free content, don't be surprised when the best content goes away. Also don't be surprised when the producers of that free content start charging because they have to earn money to survive.

Hump Day Hardware: Free Xerox Phaser Printer

Xerox FreeColorPrinters
I mentioned this offer over a year ago and I know we have a number of new subscribers so I wanted to tell you about it again. Xerox will send you a free color thermal wax printer! Of course, there are some stipulations. Basically you have to agree to print a certain number of pages each month and you have to buy your supplies from Xerox.

Don't get the wrong impression and think this is just some cheap printer. I have one myself and paid around $1500 to get it. Since it was my fourth Phaser printer, I'm not eligible for this offer. One reason I love these printers is because the cost per page is well below that of ink jet and laser printers. Think of thermal wax as a big block of crayon for each color. The wax is melted and sprayed just like an ink jet. It won't smear like an ink jet, but it could be scratched off.

This offer may not be for everyone, but I have a feeling there are many of you who would be perfect for this offer and the printer would be perfect for you.

Photoshop Web Design Book Available For Free Download

I'm certainly not a Photoshop user, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy getting a free book. The folks at Sitepoint are giving away the book The Photoshop Anthology: 101 Web Design Tips, Tricks and Techniques. This is a book that sells at Amazon for $26. Of course, the free copy is a download so it is a bit different than the printed version. The giveaway is also sponsored by an advertiser so you find one line of text at the very bottom of each page promoting the advertiser. Honestly, this wasn't a distraction at all to me.

There is a running clock on the site that says the offer will expire in a little over 27 days. So expect the offer to be gone by mid-June.

For those of you who use Corel PHOTO-PAINT to do your Web graphics, you might want to get our tutorial The Terms of Adobe Photoshop and Corel PHOTO-PAINT. It will help you translate some of the Photoshop terms used in the book so you can do the same projects in Corel PHOTO-PAINT.

I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to attend a free Webinar that I'll be teaching next Friday, March 7th, 2008. The topic of the Webinar is Logo clean up strategies. We'll go over a variety of techniques for manually re-creating these logos in the hour session.

It really is pretty simple to attend. Go to the Webinar page on the Smart Designs Web site. In the right hand column are a list of upcoming classes. As of now, the Logo clean up strategies session is listed at the top of the column. Click on Sign Up Here and fill out the form. Then join us next Friday for the Webinar. I look forward to "seeing" you all there!

People are always asking for alternative sources of clip art and/or templates for CorelDRAW. I've got some great news for you, this is a library of over 375 high-quality uniques images available for free download. In fact, the list is growing on a regular basis.

These images are supplied by the folks at Digital Art Solutions. If you aren't familiar with them, they have been providing production ready artwork and add-ons for CorelDRAW users for many years.

The process for getting the free artwork is pretty simple. Go to the clip art download page and completely fill out the form on the right hand side of the page. Yes, you have to fill it out completely to receive the free artwork. Within a day or two (probably the same day) you will get an access code and a URL where the files are located. At that point you can download any of the free clip art images or templates.

Sure, the folks at Digital Art Solutions are hoping that you'll like the artwork and that you'll buy some of their packages. In fact, they will give you a nice discount on your first order.
