Remember when you first used a Spirograph? You pin the big gear down to the page, fit the little gear in the notches, put your pen in one of the holes and draw! You follow it around—loop after loop. This is so cool! Until the pen slips, the line goes scraping off somewhere toward the side of the page, and frustration sets in. Will I ever be able to make that perfect Spirograph?
This is how I remember Spirograph. I haven’t seen one in years, but I took what I remembered and put together some gears. These will give us the ideas behind some very interesting mathematical shapes. Our job in this tutorial will be to develop the background and techniques necessary for working effectively with them.
