Step 1. Using the Type Tool (T), key in a lowercase s. Change the size to 150 points and the font to Carta. Click the page with the Rounded Rectangle Tool (M), and enter 170 x 170 points for the height and width and 12 points for the Corner Radius. Press Enter. Apply a pale yellow fill to the deer symbol and add a red outline to help distinguish the symbol when we make duplicates in the next step.
By the way, there is nothing dear about deer. Deer is a misnomer. If you saw the way these four-legged vultures have decimated my garden… but don't get me started!
Step 2. Select the deer and from the Type menu, select Create Outlines. Copy the deer and paste a copy in front (Edit | Copy and Edit | Paste in Front). Using the arrow keys, move the duplicate to the right 5 clicks and down 5 clicks. Select the Blend Tool (W) and click the bottom deer first and then click the top deer. Double-click the Blend Tool again to open the Blend Options dialog. Select Specified Steps from the drop down list and change the number of steps to 3 and press Enter. Apply a medium brown fill to the background.
Step 3. Select the blend and then select Options | Blend | Expand. Deselect the blend, then reselect it and select Ungroup from the Object menu. Select the middle deer in the group and bring it to the front (Options | Arrange | Bring to Front).
Step 4. Select the bottom most deer, and the background, and send both to the back (Options | Arrange | Send to Back). Remember to select both the deer and the background when you send them to the back or you'll be missing a deer (not that this would be a tragedy!)
Step 5. You should now have a foreground deer, in the center, and two deer outlines top and two deer outlines bottom. Apply a dark brown fill to the deer closest to the top of the page, and the second from the bottom of the page as shown.
Step 6. Apply a light brown fill to the second deer from the top and the deer closest to the bottom. I know this is confusing, but from top to bottom, here's what we should have: dark brown (shadow), light brown (highlight), center deer, dark brown (shadow), and light brown (highlight).
Step 7. Change the color of the middle deer to the same color as the background rectangle.
To soften the effect, select the center deer (the whole deer) and cut it to the clipboard (Edit | Cut). Use the Blend Tool to blend from the topmost deer to the next deer down. Deselect and create a new blend from the bottommost deer to the next-to-the-bottom deer. Paste the deer from the clipboard on top (Edit | Paste in Front). Venison anyone? Sorry, I can't imagine what came over me!
