Step 1. Using the Type tool, key in a lowercase s. Change the size to 150 points and the font to Carta. Using the Rectangle tool, draw a 2.5 inch x 2.5 inch square. In the Rectangle Inspector, change the Corner Radius to .25 inch. Apply a pale yellow fill to the deer symbol and add a red outline to help distinguish the symbol when we make duplicates in the next step.
By the way, deer is a misnomer. There is absolutely nothing dear about a deer. If you saw the way these four-legged vultures have decimated my garden… but don't get me started!
Step 2. Select the deer and from the Text menu, select Convert to Paths. Copy the deer to the clipboard (Edit | Copy) and paste a copy in front (Edit | Paste in Front). Using the arrow keys, move the duplicate up one click, and to the left one click. Repeat copying, pasting in front, and moving up and left one click, until you have 5 deer. The way these deer multiply is frightening, isn't it?
Step 3. Select the topmost deer in the group, and the background and send them to the back (Modify | Arrange | Send to Back). Remember to send both the topmost deer and the background to the back or you'll be missing a deer (no big deal in my opinion!)
Step 4. Select the middle deer (third from the bottom), and bring it to front (Modify | Arrange | Bring to Front).
Step 5. You should now have a foreground deer, in the center, and two deer outlines top and two deer outlines bottom. Apply a dark brown fill to the deer closest to the top of the page, and to the second from the bottom of the page as shown.
Step 6. Apply a light brown fill to the second deer from the top and the deer closest to the bottom. I know this is confusing, but from top to bottom, here's what we should have: dark brown (shadow), light brown (highlight), center deer, dark brown (shadow), and light brown (highlight).
Step 7. Change the color of the middle deer to the same color as the background. Or you might want to add a target! Sorry, I can't help myself.
The Easy Way. Select the rectangle and the center deer and make a duplicate. Open the Xtra Operations palette. (Window | Xtras | Operations). Locate the Emboss operation (the embossed square button icon). Click to open the Emboss dialog. Select Quilt (last icon on the top right) for the emboss type. Set the Depth to 0.0277 and set the Angle to 135 degrees. From the Color Mixer panel, mix and drag a light brown color into the Highlight color box and mix and drag a dark brown color to the Shadow color box. Click OK.
I don't know. I think the hard way looks better. What do you think?
