K.N.Pepper is a consummate artist and scientist, continually striving to quantify the tangible components of representational art.
Any work of art, KN asserts, consists of two components - 90% craft, 10% content. The craft component, so often neglected, is learnable/teachable. (The content comes from 'divine' inspiration.) KN has devoted his entire life to the study of the craft. A physicist and engineer by training, he has applied mathematics, geometric optics and sundry other principles of science to the problems of representation to further his knowledge of form, perspective, colour interplay, shadow geometry, and numerous other details that contribute to the veracity of any good illustration.
While a student and working as a textile colour chemist at one of the world's largest dyestuff manufacturing companies, KN became fascinated with the phenomena of colour. This inspired him to invent (and publish) Vectorial Colour Synthesis, a mathematical means for matching any colour using virtually any set of dyes the company wished to sell. The technique was hailed as revolutionary, reducing a week of trial-and-error drudgery to 15 minutes of slide rule calculation. To this day KN performs all colour analysis using vector algebra.
KN began drawing as a toddler and was doing professional work before reaching his teens. His first love has always been cartooning, followed by visual deception of any kind (trompe l'oeil, forgeries, optical illusions, visual puns, etc.) Although principally an engineering consultant, his cartoons have appeared in numerous magazines under a variety of absurd pen names.
KN's technique consists almost entirely of drawing by hand, scanning, then using Corel software to clean, colour and embellish. A classicist at heart, he asserts that the lowly pencil in the hands of a craftsman is mightier than any computer or software in existence. He stresses the importance of understanding fundamental principles, which are invariant, over any software tool, which are transitory.
KN enjoys the company of two kinds of people - those he can learn from and those who want to learn from him.
