If you have been to the Syntrillium Software site recently you will find yourself at adobe.com instantly. The Phoenix-based company is no more. Fortunatly for those fans of Syntrillium’s sound editing application Cool Edit Pro, the program is now in the hands of Adobe. As for the remainder of the titles in the Syntrillium stable, those have been discontinued. On August 18th, 2003 Adobe released a rebranded version of Cool Edit Pro. For those who have purchased Cool Edit Pro 2.X, and you have your serial number handy, there is gratis upgrade via Adobe waiting for you.
For a long time Adobe has been moving beyond the perimeters of Graphic Design. With Web applications already in place and video editing as well, it was just a matter of time before they entered sound editing. Their purchase of Cool Edit Pro makes sense given that vision. This is also interesting in that at roughly the same time, Sound Forge has been taken over by Sony Corporation.
With all of the mergers, sales and acquisitions, the direction of software for serious editing needs has become an industry dominated by the big names. This has several positive benefits for consumers. The stability of an established company purchasing innovative smaller companies means that these applications will have access to resources and development technology that they may not have had previously. This also spells greater support and a greater likelihood of more versions upgraded to take advantage of new technologies and operating systems. Even this early on, Cool Edit has already been slightly “Adobe—ized” to fit in with their existing titles.
Now you have several options for purchasing Audition. You can buy it as an independent application, or as part of several packages. The Video Collection includes After Effects Standard, Adobe Premiere Pro, Encore DVD, and of course Audition. The Pro Video Collection upgrades to After Effects Pro and Photoshop 7 as added features along with the rest of the regular video collection included.
As far as major revisions go, Audition is by and large interface-wise the same as Cool Edit Pro. There is little here to throw off existing users. Billed as a 128—Track mixing professional studio tool for broadcasters and other pros, there is much here to suggest that this is just that, a pro tool. But, even the less than detailed oriented user could find much here to like. In fact, there is a great deal here.
Audition comes with a full arsenal of editing tools. Recording, mixing, analysis, looping, editing and other mastering tools are all here. One cannot fault Adobe for not being inclusive or feature rich.
Culled from loopology.com and Syntrillium’s sets, Audition, which comes on two CD’s, includes a rich set of royalty—free loops. Also enclosed is a detailed 362 page user guide. There was no scrimping on documentation here. Thankfully, Adobe, along with Corel, have opted to maintain the new trend of including real books with their applications.
If file support is an issue, Adobe Audition supports over 20 file formats including Mp3Pro and six—channel wave files. The feature set is so rich, Audition sits well in comparison to Sound Forge Six. It is that detailed and highly configurable.
Also included with Audition is the ability to edit sound with video. The new integration with Premiere Pro is no doubt an influence on this feature, which I don’t recall with earlier versions of Cool Edit.
The most important features, for both the pro and non—professional are the restoration and noise reduction features. This also includes noise and pop elimination, an essential if you are transcribing recordings from analog sources. The convenience and power of this feature is certain to draw the serious end—user towards audition.
With a highly configurable interface, destructive and non—destructive editing, the power in Audition is that of a full featured sound editor. When coupled with the integration with Premiere Pro and After Effects, the advantages of adding Audition to a full Adobe Suite makes sense. It is also pragmatic of Adobe to include it as part of the Digital Video Edition.
For home users that are serious about audio, this is an excellent tool. For those with Adobe applications already installed, this does narrow down the choices of software considerably. Rich with features, functions and video ready, Adobe has wisely added sound to an already impressive round of digital video and imaging software.
For the serious user, this is a definite look into for those needs. For those that are not nearly into sound to this degree, this may be far more than you need. However, having more is always preferable to having less when it comes to software.
