The idea of an integrated application that can handle print design, Web creation and image manipulation has been around for a long time. On paper, the idea sounds great. But the hard core reality of design is that you need separate programs in order to design. While there have been some bold and brave steps taken regarding the all in one solution, none have been adopted by the creative crowd, and with good reason.
Factoring in the complexity of design, and the fact that so much of it involves steps and processes, no one program could be detailed enough and accessible enough to make that a reality. Even if you did, the program would be either too complex to maneuver, or far too under powered just in order to fit everything into one package. While Corel has done an admirable job with merging some functions, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is still a suite with the image manipulation program an independent application.
What designers and creative professionals need and demand are high powered, visually accessible programs that work well together. It is not an accident that Adobe has come to the rescue with a sweet deal of a suite that places the very best of the lot into one very comprehensive package. Weighing in on four disks, the premium Creative Suite CS 2 is a huge expansive program that literally brings the best of print software together into one very tight comprehensive package.
The big advantage of purchasing a bundled suite is both price and function. Should you purchase the parts independently, the cost is appreciably higher. The rule of thumb here is that if you intend to purchase more than one Adobe product, the best value is to go for the Suite. That is still very true with Adobe CS 2.
Compelling arguments for going the bundled route are clear cut. Adobe Creative Suite 2 offers up a far more consistent interface between the programs than in the past. That is proven by the new Control Palette in Adobe Illustrator CS 2, one that closely resembles Photoshop CS 2's. Augmenting these treasures is a much tighter application integration and the brilliantly designed Adobe Bridge. Acting as the ultimate file manager for all of the attendant parts of the program, the idea to make it accessible independently and as part of each program is pure layout genius.
Choosing between the Premium version and the Standard version will be a hard one. Bundled with the standard pack are Photoshop CS 2, and of course Image Ready, along with it, Ilustrator CS 2, Indesign CS 2 and of course the Bridge. Adding value and power to the Premium suite are GoLive CS 2 and Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.
Having been a long time fan of Acrobat Pro, v7 brings with it even more versatility and power. For those that need to collaborate across the Web, or work with teams, Acrobat becomes the common denominator program that makes sharing complex designs with those minus complex applications with which to view them a no brainer task. While each Adobe program exports to Acrobat, if you are working in a multi user environment with a plethora of applications, Acrobat Pro becomes increasingly important in order to facilitate communication with those on your creative project.
While broadband is becoming common place, I have witnessed design projects involving at least one person who is not on high speed. Usually that person is the one needed to approve a design. It sometimes happens to be the only person on the crew that has no idea what the difference between a vector graphic and a bitmap image is. The reality of design in business has made Acrobat more and more essential. It is not until you deal with compatibility and viewing problems that you see the beauty of the program.
And that beauty is tied closely to the idea of file sharing and integration. It is truly troublesome when you must transfer layer rich images from Photoshop into an image layout program only to see your layers turn to lather. It is equally frustration when files lose data and shape in transition between programs.
While Photoshop CS 2 has one foot in the digital divide and the other in print, much the same way Illustrator CS 2 works well in both worlds, Indesign CS 2 is basically for print creation. Adding Adobe GoLive CS 2 to the mix enables a certain degree of transition from print to the Web. While it remains a full featured program, the real use of GoLive is as a step to translating material created in the other programs to the Web.
Being that Indesign CS 2, Photoshop CS 2 and Illustrator CS 2 were created with the idea of integration, the headaches associated with manipulating files created in multiple programs is alleviated. Aiding that process is Adobe Version Cue CS 2, a compact utility designed to keep files and transitions together while in transition.
Having the best of breed all under one roof is definitely a compelling reason to use Creative Suite CS 2. For those that desire the latest feature set of Photoshop CS 2 and the rich versatility of the powerful Indesign CS 2 for layout, those two programs are enough justification to go for the big package. While cost is always a concern, if you want the very best programs with the most bang for the buck and the most stability, Adobe has cornered the design market.
There are also available in the suite training videos and a supply of supplemental materials included.
