When Adobe introduced Premiere Pro v1, they made the choice to end producing video editing software for the Mac platform. Awareness of the options already open to Mac users may have been the primary reason. Yet another possible reason could be that video editing software on the Windows platform is a hotly contested arena. With no clear cut winners, there is plenty of room for any one software company to produce the ultimate Windows video editing program. Considering what Adobe is aiming to do, they are well on their way to dominating this field too.
With Final Cut Pro dominating the Mac end, Adobe wisely opted to concentrate on the Windows platform. Certainly this may have alienated many a faithful Mac user, the move has saved the application from possible total extinction. Minus any one Windows program that dominates video editing, Adobe has leveraged their considerable power with Photoshop CS and After Effects Pro 6.5 to make Premiere Pro the undisputed King of the Windows video editing world, that is when you include the power of After Effects and Photoshop CS.
While there are several all in one, or nearly all in one, solutions to video editing, Adobe has taken the wiser path by looking at video as a modular process. Having worked with all in one programs, or those that break down the process into separate but integrated, components, the logic behind separate, but highly interoperable, programs has a distinct advantage. In terms of computing power, ease of use, and other factors, it simply makes more sense.
Should you be considering more than two programs from Adobe, the best available option is the package deals. Coming in Pro and Standard, the Pro version adds After Effects 6.5 Pro and Photoshop CS, Adobe is making the venture that you will want the entire video package. Considering the level of integration found here, and the dependency Premiere Pro has on both After Effects and Audition, it makes real sense to purchase it as part of a package deal.
Leveraging their power with After Effects and Photoshop, Adobe is playing hard ball with the competition. To sweeten the deal, the full featured sound editor, Audition 1.5 is included as the total sound editing program. The one time premium package from Arizona based Syntrillium Cool Edit, now known as Audition, still bears an uncanny resemblance to Cool Edit. Having purchased the technology from Syntrillium, the program has yet to take on the "Adobe Look." However, that does not prevent it from being a very able editor.
Feature wise, there are some details here that are rarely found on packages like this one. The sheer power and detail of the program are simply amazing. For your average home user, this may be about all you could need and then some. For the hard core pros, there is much to recommend this able full featured program.
The big under the hood changes for Premiere Pro center around its ability to function with After Effects version 6.5 in ways that make things much easier. Pasted clips can now go back and forth between Premiere and After Effects readily. In this new incarnation, the two programs are starting to resemble each other.
Not only has interoperability included After Effects, it also includes Photoshop CS. Now you can edit more freely than before between the programs without the fear of losing information. And the big selling point is that transitions and Bezier Curves are more realized that in Premiere Pro 1.
On the surfaces, the differences are hard to discern, but in workflow, detail and precision, this update takes the idea of the integrated approach to new levels. It also adds refinements that make Premiere an even more sophisticated option.
For those that are not power users, Premiere Pro offers much for even the novice. One of the big changes between Premiere Pro and other versions was that Premiere Pro was much easier to use than v5. With a sleeker interface, logical placement of buttons and real time viewing of effects, Premiere is now positioned to be the choice of Windows users.
Although the program makes excellent use of the Pentium IV's Hyper Threading, believe it or not, it works well with slightly older Pentium IVs with the HT technology without too much loss in speed. The marvels with the refinements made to Premiere are such that if you were ever hesitant to consider the program, now is perhaps the best time to pick up a copy.
With greater control over transitions, tighter integration with After Effects and Photoshop, plus a high end sound editing program and its own DVD authoring software, this is a complete video editing package that has all of the loose ends covered.
When taken as a collection, Adobe's Video Collection Pro has a great deal to offer that make it a compelling choice.
As a package deal, the Pro Collection makes a great deal of sense. In fact, you may not want to use it unless you have After Effects and Photoshop around. The power these three alone have make video editing that much simpler and that much better. As a value package for serious video editing on the Windows platform, it does not get much better than this.
The selling points with Adobe are solid construction, if nothing else Premiere in my experience has always been stable, and interaction with the remainder of the Adobe family. One would be very hard pressed to find a more detailed solution within these price points. If you can get a package like this, run out and get it and start exploring.
