Review of Altec Lansing FX6021 3-Piece System

For some inexplicable reason, computer speakers are often the last peripheral given attention. Naturally, printers, scanners and assorted pen and tablet devices are high on the list of things purchased after a new computer has been acquired. However if you create any type of multimedia, or are considering the PC as the hub of a home entertainment system, speakers should figure high on your list of must have add ons.

What is often not well documented with some computers are their sound capabilities. Until I tested a set of speakers recently, I had no idea that surround sound was supported by my particular test unit. This important detail was missing. It was not made clear. Only after digging through the documentation did I learn of the true power of this particular system’s sound card. What I have also learned in my exploration of speakers is that you may not need five speakers and a subwoofer to obtain excellent sound. Believe it or not, it is possible to get outstanding results with just two speakers and one subwoofer.

The key to having great without having to place speakers here, there and everywhere is which ones you chose, the technology employed and the amount of money you are willing to spend. Coming in at nearly $300, the FX6021 from Altec Lansing is a far cry from the $35 that sometimes come standard with most consumer systems. Although a bit on the high end, the truth is in the sound.

Altec Lansing has always had a solid reputation with their systems. The VS4121, another 2.1 system, produced outstanding results at just about $100 for the whole system. The detail was superb, the bass rich and there was no loss of clarity. I actually had a sound tech listen to them, and they were amazed at the rich sound with these speakers.

While that system was an excellent, if not sweet deal, the FX6021 takes the sound to another level. Believe it or not, the hype about this new offering from Altec Lansing is not hype at all. Once you listen to this speaker system, you realize what is possible from just a standard PC minus surround sound support. What you may hear coming out will impress you, your friends and even your neighbors. Yes, they can be that loud.

According to Altec Lansing, the FX6021 uses the "In Concert" Technology to obtain these excellent results. Using three separate amplifiers to power 12 high performance micro drivers, the sound is pure and nearly distortion free. There is no way to describe the sound other than deep, rich and vibrant. Be it opera or demanding gaming, these powerful speakers can tackle any sound.

True to form, the new FX 6021 is sleek. The slim modern minimalist silver colored metal base blend well in nearly any decor or PC color scheme. What is great about the slim line speakers, they measure about 2 1/2 inches across, 13 inches high and just a scant one inch deep. They can rest on their own stand, or mounted flat to the wall. The wood subwoofer is about as unobtrusive as possible.

The look of the system does not end with the stunning speaker. The remote rests on a base that connects to the speaker system. You can alter volume, base, treble and the on and off switch from the metallic base, or the wireless remote. Thin, much like the remotes that ship with most digital camcorders, it rests on its side in the base control unit. Elegant, simple and well thought out, even the details here are nothing short of what you would expect.

Running this set up on a standard consumer PC, it transformed the sound into a sonic sweep that is every bit as solid as that coming from systems costing more. You can basically turn your standard PC or Mac into a real powerhouse!

Summation

Be it the latest Mac or the most recent PC, the FX 6021 speaker system from Altec Lansing is a major triumph in sound. Using their own technological innovations, the sound is as clear up close as it is across the room. The quality of sound is so solid that this set up could easily replace most stereos, if not best them. If you think only large space consuming speakers are the only way to rich sound, this set up proves that is not entirely the case. With the ability to position next to a monitor, or mounted flat to the wall, looks wise and sound wise, Altec Lansing has created a home user speaker set up that brings with it the real sense of a pro system. It is easy to see this as a consumer system that hides beneath its stylish looks a professional powerhouse.

If I sound enthused by this system, it is because it is well worth getting enthused over when you listen to it just once. I still find it amazing that my two year old PC can sound this fantastic! Naturally, this power comes at a price, however, if you factor the price of a good stereo system, this speaker set up actually winds up saving you money and space. Rather than duplicating needs, speakers this good turn the PC or Mac into the hub of an excellent sound system.
