If you have ever wanted to create your own music CD's on your computer, but wondered just how to do it ,and with what, Audiograbber is one piece of software that can make that happen.
What Audiograbber does is copy music tracks from your CD's. What it can do, and do well, is create a digital version of the original source without using the sound card. In other words, it copies digitally. This insures perfect duplicates. Do keep in mind it can also reproduce music with the sound card.
If that were not enough, Audiograbber 1.82 can check to see if the dups created are faithful to the original. Thus you have a built in check to make sure you are not losing sound or quality.
One of the features included covers the ability to automatically normalize music. The application can even delete silences from the start and/or end of a track. This program can also send tracks to an external MP3 encoder like Fraunhofers L3enc. It can even use some MP3/WMA encoders to create MP3 files on the fly. Audiograbber also has access to track listings from CDDB. If analog music, like LP's, has you stumped, Audiograbber has the ability to rip songs from LP's and turn them into WAV files or MP3's. The added functionality thus expands from simple basic ripping to conversion of analog music into digital.
Keep in mind that in order to extract audio directly to MP3 or WMA files without creating a WAV file first, the CD-ROM drive being used must support digital audio extraction. For those with newer systems, this may not be an issue. With older drives, one has to make this intermediate step in order to successfully "rip" sound files.
One of the real standout features that I noticed with Audiograbber, and I do not recall this from previous editions, is that there is integration with the new Media Player from Microsoft, Series 9.
For those that want control, or rip frequently, Audiograbber was something of a standard when I was introduced to the PC years ago. With something of a reputation as being reliable, my past experiences, as limited as they were, were positive. It seems that Audiograbber has lost none of its stability along the way.
If you wish to test drive the program, it is available as a free download. However, there are some limitations with the free version. The main one being you are limited as to how many tracks you can rip from any CD at any one time.
One of the best advantages of this program is that it installs without depositing files all over your hard drive. Unlike some applications that feel duty bound to make removal akin to brain surgery, Audiograbber rests in one directory that is easily removed. It does come with an uninstall option.
If you are familiar with Audiograbber, this new version has a number of improvements and modifications. This includes support for USB drives and Windows digital playback. There is improved support for Windows XP and 2000. There are also a few bug fixes, which is always nice. If memory servers me properly, it has been a while since I checked up on Audiograbber, this application is updated on a regular basis.
One of the nice extras that comes with Audiograbber, which anyone with a Net connection can take advantage of, are the many resources on the home page. There are tips and tricks, forums, a Q and A section and links that help answer detailed questions about Audio ripping. For those that need to know more, this is an excellent site to bookmark.
While there are a plethora of sound and sound ripping applications available, few approach Audiograbber when it comes to power, customization and detail. On a first glance this program may seem techno heavy. In reality, this is really a very easy application to master. The default settings will work well for most users. Considering advances in technology, many of these features may, or may not, be needed regarding sound reproduction. But as is always the case, it is nice to find that you have options.
Audiograbber, from my own experiences, has always been a proven performer. On older systems, Audiograbber made pristine copies of CD's with little effort or knowledge on my part. It is a small compact download, and something well worth checking out if ripping is part of your daily set of activities. Certainly you can find many sound ripping applications on the market, but when it comes to fine detail, Audiograbber is a stand out.
