Photoshop has created a cottage industry in plug—ins. With a handful of companies dutifully releasing new additions to the legendary standard in digital image manipulation, Auto FX has been a long time contributor to the field. Releasing a bevy of feature rich support programs, Mystical Tint Tone and Color represents yet another add in for Photoshop.
What makes this plug-in a stand out in many respects is that it can function as an independent application. Working either as a Photoshop plug—in or as a standalone program, Mystical Tint Tone and Color makes short work of adjusting colors and tints.
Using a rather unorthodox graphical user interface, rounded bubble like buttons and various other esoteric arrangements of features is visual intriguing, although a far cry from any type of uniform standard that most digital graphics programs follow. Fortunately, the program is relatively easy to master once you move past the idiosyncrasies of the visual arresting interface.
The big question, and it is a defining one, is the practicality of the interface. A Photoshop professional may have little difficulty replicating the effects offered here. Even with that in mind, I doubt if even the most trained digital pro can do it quickly. As feature rich as the program is, finding what you need and manipulating it can be a real struggle. There is also the added hurdle of what to do when you need to work quickly and have neither the time nor the inclination to adjust settings. When it comes to time saving, and sheer ease of use, MTTC starts to become a practical tool.
For the beginner, or the mid level professional, the 38 color effects and some 700 presets offer a wealth of creative opportunities. Utilizing a quick effects preview button, you can see some of the adjustments in real time. However, keep in mind that MTTC does make some serious demands on your system resources. Even running with 512 MB of RAM with a Pentium with HyperThreading, working this plug—in with Photoshop can be a resource drain. For older systems, you may want to measure your system requirements to see if they can handle the needs of the program. This becomes a particular concern when working with larger files.
Perhaps the biggest concern to new users is simply figuring out how things work and where they are. Instead of adjustable presets, we have memory dots that can store various actions. Again, once you move past the unique interface, you can quickly get down to business. As a result of fast previews, and a considerable amount of customization open to the end user, once you start focusing on your editing options, a plethora of creative opportunities arise.
For those curious to know if this plug—in works with the new Photoshop CS, the answer is a resounding yes. Also of note, there is a Mac OS X ready version of this program.
Being able to actually alter the contrast, color and other variables in a color image is entrancing. The ability to see those options depends as much on technical skill with the PC as it does with being able to perceive the possibilities. What MTTC does is break down what is possible into manageable organized presets that permit an amazing amount of customization. Rather than poring over various levels, devices, layers and other frequently confusing systems and programs, Mystical Tint Tone and Color put the fun back in the imaginative uses of photos in the digital realm. Taking what it can and cannot do, the program is a resounding success that at least takes some of the pain out of professional photo manipulation. If you need to add a plug—in to your list, this one is a standout.
