Adding interest to text can turn a blasé document into something that catches the eye. The only problem is that in order to turn text into something imaginative usually requires the assistance of some rather heavy duty applications. This translates into using Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Painter or even some rather high end 3D applications like Maya, Cinema 4D or 3D Studio Max. Well there is a way to obtain interesting text effects without having or resort to high end applications.
Much in the same way that Xara has turned complex functions into step by step tasks, Font Twister can turn any TrueType font into something unique. Even if you have little experience with text, Font Twister can open up options that most programs cannot. For those intimidated by both the PC and graphic design, this program takes a great deal of the anguish out of creating solid creative text designs.
The opening interface of the program reminds me a bit of the excellent Ulead Cool 3D. When you crack open Font Twister you are greeted with a lean interface that showcases text and the options available below. Sensible, to the point and without a lot of fuss, the utilitarian look is deceptive. There is a great deal of customization that takes place once you explore the various options.
If you are at a total loss of what to do, Font Twister makes it easy by offering over 50 built-in styles. Much like Xara in this respect, templates for various styles are available with most avoiding the pitfalls of bad design. There is sufficient range here to fill even the most unlikely design need.
Text is easy enough to enter. Just open the tab below the main window, and you have instant access to the fonts on your PC. Options such as boldness, opacity and scale are accessible. Just choose from the available options and you can see the effects in real time.
Also, beveling text in 3D is possible. The number of options in this area are such that text can take on a plethora of looks. Options that can and often do take longer with other programs becomes a matter of mixing and matching options. Font Twister also supports a number of file formats including bmp, jpg, png, tiff and wmf.
The other features include frames, shadows, outlines, deform, text background and text surface, color and a text effects generator. What the text effects generator does is run through a series of options for your selected text. Running like a slide show, you are presented with a random selection of options. Should you see one that you like, just click on that image and the show immediately stops. With the selected image you can then keep it, alter it, discard it, or save it for later use. Even if you are not feeling particularly creative, Font Twister can literally do the work for you.
For those who wish to create interesting headers or text for newsletters, magazines or Web sites, Font Twister offers an effective solution regarding text. Aside from graphic designers, those new to the world of computers and graphic design often overlook the importance of text. Text not only adds eye appeal to a document, it can, when effectively used, underscore what is said. If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine how powerful the right font, with the right background can be.
If you are looking for a simple, direct no nonsense program that can turn text into a more emotional, expressive artistic expression without the need for knowing in depth how to manipulate an image, this is the program for you. Also, this application does work on Windows 95. In fact, this program does not require OpenGL, DirectX or other libraries. The setup does not modify your system. It does not place DLL files everywhere on your hard drive, or alter your registry. This is about as unobtrusive as any application can be for a graphics install.
