Review of Hewlett Packard Deskjet 995 Printer

© 2003 by Kurt von Behrmann. All Rights Reserved.

HP has a much deserved reputation for producing consistent printers. From their LaserJets to their inkjets, HP has in my experience produced solid products. What ultimately separates one company from another regarding printers at this point in time is durability, functionality and the ability to produce clear crisp images. With regards to the last point, the 995Ck is excellent.

The major reason anyone buys a color inkjet printer is color. When the 995 is paired with the right high quality paper settings and the right paper, the results are nothing short of fantastic. Shades, notes and detail are such that the images look like photographed ones. Even using a relatively medium level of resolution on images, the 995 Ck performed like a trooper.

If you are like me, you are always wondering if the latest software can perform with the latest printers. In working with InDesign, CorelDRAW, Illustrator, Photoshop and other similar programs there were no issues. The system handled large scale jobs without any problems. The advertised 5 pages per minute using high color seems about right. With regards to printing on regular paper, the text was about as clear as a LaserJet printer. In short, the quality is reminiscent of the 5650, but I would say slightly finer.

Coming in at $249.99, in the ranks of home printers, this is somewhere in the upper range. The reason for that may stem from the fact that this printer is Bluetooth enabled. What this means in short is that it is equipped for wireless printing from those devices that can utilize Bluetooth technology. The advantage of this becomes easy to see if you are using multiple PCs or such portable items like laptops, camera mobile phones and PDA’s.

The selling point of Bluetooth is that you can be as far as thirty feet from the printer, and still manage to print from your source. With homes that are not networked, or where there are multiple devices requiring printing access, the ease of use of Bluetooth makes sense. However, if you are simply utilizing one PC to one printer, unless you are dealing with a camera or other devices, the functionality of Bluetooth may have limited appeal. Much rests on how many PCs you have, and how many peripherals you need to set up that use a printer.

As far as setup goes, the 995ck is very similar to the 920c when it comes to software drivers and actual installation. HP has consistently made the process painless. That ease of use is not lost here. There is little here to intimidate the new user, or frustrate the experienced one.

The actual need for the included software toolbox is more geared towards newer users, however, don’t overlook it either. The enclosed software manual is rather thin. If you are unfamiliar with settings that pertain to this specific unit, consider keeping the enclosed software on your systems as a good reference tool. While more complete than that the hardcopy version, it does not take too long to become used to accessing it after a period of time.

What is interesting about the metallic gray and darker gray unit is how much in form it is to the 920c. Though a little more detailed, the shape of both printers are surprisingly similar. Unlike the now discontinued sleek contemporary 5650, which looked more like a component in a Bang and Olufsen stereo, the 995 CK has a slightly heavier rounded less slim appearance.

Like other new printers in the HP line, this one does not feature a retractable paper tray. It also features printing only via a USB port. Though this printer holds about 150 pages, I would say 100 is a good limit.

Summation

In terms of quality, speed and compatibility with existing software, the 995 Ck has managed to keep up with the reputation that HP has earned over the years. There is really precious little to dislike about the unit. The picture quality is excellent. The text looks clear without jagged edges. Again, there is little to find fault here.

However, unless you know you are going to use Bluetooth, and you feel comfortable committing to this technology, you could save yourself a few dollars by picking another system. If you see Bluetooth as a feature you want to incorporate into your system, then considering this unit makes sense. Naturally, contact HP concerning if your specific device is supported.
