This is one of those devices that takes a while to get accustomed to using. However, after watching the instructional video for the more advanced model, I began to realize that this product is most deceptive, when used following the video on line, it does do what it claims, and rather well.
What the IRISpen express does is allow you to scan bits of text, and numeric information, literally line by line into your clipboard or a specific application. Rather than going to the trouble of using an OCR application, or typing details directly into an application, the IRISpen express allows you to just drag the pen like scanner across the surface of the page and begin scanning text directly into whatever application you are using.
At first, I was a bit skeptical about the program and its effectiveness. Then after a few attempts and getting a feel for the device, I started to realize that there are some very practical applications this peripheral offers to writers, administrative assistants and those that need to enter small bits of data quickly.
Unlike other devices in this arena, the IRISpen express demands that you be tied to your PC or Mac, the device supports both platforms. What this means is that you do not have to worry with batteries or power supplies. Because the unit draws power from the USB connection, the curving shaped apparatus is powered up and ready to scan.
Like Readiris Pro, the same attention to accuracy is here. Information literally appears on screen once you stop scanning. The only real problem you may have is picking the right speed to scan.
Surprisingly, this pen like device does better when you scan at a relatively fast pace. Go too slow and the accuracy is shaky. Go too fast and words start to miss letters. Locating the right speed and the right touch is perhaps the most difficult part of the device to master.
On the plus side, installation is painless and smooth. There were no issues or conflicts running it on my test system. In my tests, data entered without problems in Microsoft Word 2003 and the current edition of WordPerfect. Outlook 2003 also responded well in my tests.
Depending on the size and color used in the text scanned, the IRISpen express managed to overcome a number of obstacles thrown at it when scanning. Certain figures and text seemed to really stump the program, but if scanned at a reasonable pace, it can deal with a surprising array of situations.
The actual time it takes to scan the text or numbers is fast. It is nearly instant. Again, the only hard part is figuring out the speed and touch needed to make it work effectively. Once you master that trick, the rest is fairly smooth.
For those that need to enter numbers quickly, repetitive details and numbers into spreadsheets, if you are dealing with hard copy and need to multitask, this pen scanner could easily be a life saver. Accurate, fast and easy to handle, the program offers a way to enter small pieces of information without having to go to the bother of scanning an entire page to obtain a sentence or two.
The program is effective and a great tool for writers and office workers that need to enter data quickly.
