Review of KanguruMicro Drive 2

© 2003 by Kurt von Behrmann. All Rights Reserved.

If you have ever thought about a storage device for moving files that is both portable and operable on many operating systems, your day has arrived. The Kanguru Micro Drive 2 is one of those small, almost miniscule, devices that can store files and interact with computers running on a variety of operating systems. If you work with Mac’s, Windows and Linux and must transfer files back and forth, this device has you covered.

While CD’s and DVD’s are great storage devices, for those that work across many different computer platforms daily, the need for a way to transport files easily, painlessly and conveniently becomes a necessity that even these digital formats sometimes cannot accomdate. The problem of moving, storing and keeping files intact can be an issue when you are working with computers that do not share similar features. Certainly one can use the Internet to store files. This works very well. However if the PC you are working on is not connected, then you are out of luck. Plus, if you are transferring very large files, the Net, depending on connection, connection speeds and other factors, this may not always in every instance be the most practical way to transfer files.

Should you be caught in a scenario where you need to work with a computer that lacks your particular type of storage device, you may face serious issues when storing and moving information. As common as CD’s are, as well as writing software, I have witnessed first hand compatibility problems. CD’s created on one system using certain software may not work on all machines. Throw in the different operating systems, and there are a slew of difficulties to overcome.

Zip drives tried to address these issues. Unfortunately, there were problems in that zip drives were never as common place as CD-ROM drives. Offering speed and storage, the Zip drive involved setting up software and hardware on machines not already running the apparatus. As the Zip drive solved some problems with file storage and cross platform issues, there are situations where this can be very cumbersome, as well as costly.

Between storing files across different computer platforms, differing storage devices and often conflicting hardware, moving and storing data across different computer platforms presents a plethora of problems. This is where the Kanguru Micro Drive Two solves a plethora of problems when it comes to storing and moving data.

Naturally portability is always a concern when one is mobile. The Kanguru drive is not much larger than an average pen. It can be easily worn on a shirt pocket. Much like a ballpoint pen, it has a small clip on the side allowing you to carry it in this manner.

One of the big advantages of the Kanguru drive, immediately after portability, is the fact that it does not require power cables. With some file sharing hardware there is always the need to carry other support software or hardware. The Kanguru drive frees the user of having to be concerned with carrying around a slew of other devices. Using the USB port to transfer files, it is also powered by the same port to operate. This eliminates the need for additional power cables.

Should your USB port be blocked, the Kanguru does ship with an extension cable that allows you to connect should the USB port on your machine be difficult for the device to access directly. With so many devices connecting to USB ports, having this one cable ready can be a real life saver.

Connecting the Kanguru is about as simple as plugging it into your USB port. It actually is plug and play compatible. Although there are a few operating systems that may require you to use software to utilize the USB port, for Windows 98, 98SE, ME, NT, 2000 and XP this is not a problem. On the Mac OS, versions 8.6 and higher do not require additional software. In many cases, the Kanguru does not require additional software for saving and transfer. The unit does ship with a mini CD that includes drivers for systems where they may be needed. Even here scale is taken into consideration.

Once connected, the Kanguru 2 shows up as another drive on your system. You basically use it as you would another hard drive. Just drag and drop, and your files are safely stored. There is no need for special software to save files to the unit.

From my experiences working with the Kanguru Micro Drive 2.0, file sharing was fast, simple and easy. The unit even allows you to lock files to prevent accidental erasure. Offering not only portability, the drive also offers a level of security in keeping your files safe. The device also includes an LED indicator and power support savings mode.

The Kanguru Micro Drive works with the relatively new USB 2.0 well. This means that the device can take advantage of the higher transfer speeds of USB 2.0 without fear. Fortunately, The Kanguru is completely compatible with the older USB 1.1, still very much in use. Do not fear if you are equipped with USB 2.0 on your system. In my informal tests it works very quickly and efficiently on USB 1.1 ports without issue.

The drive also comes in a variety of formats and price points. The unit starts with 32 MB of RAM at about $39.95. The unit is available in other formats, and price points, with sizes in storage topping out with a 2 GB unit. The Kanguru also has a docking station option sold separately.

Summation:

For those times when you need to transfer files and/or store important files conveniently and quickly, the Kanguru offers true convenience at some excellent price points. This is one of those small devices that anyone using a PC or Mac cannot help but want to add to his or her arsenal of computing devices. The ease of use is a marvel, and the size a blessing. The ability to keep, transfer and store large files with this much convenience solves one of the biggest hurdles facing computer users: cross platform compatibility. This is one excellent solution that I cannot imagine anyone using a computer not wanting or needing. After a few days with the device, I really cannot envision not having this device around. While you can store files on the Internet, if you need to move large files between PC’s fast and not fear loss of data or having to split files, the Kanguru makes small work of large file transfer.

As a small note, if you are interested in MP3 players, and Flash drives rolled into one, Kanguru Solutions does offer their own devices that do both.
