A good keyboard and mouse is not as common as you may think. Most systems, except in those rare situations, ship with keyboards and mice that are really not very substantial, well designed or comfortable to use.
For those accustomed to the standard keyboard, which is really just the typewriter keyboard updated, the Comfort Duo departs significantly from the tried, true and familiar. The split board takes into consideration the natural inclination of your hands to rest at angles to each other. Employing ergonomics in this instance means that you will be finding yourself typing with more ease than the appearance of the keyboard may hint.
The choice of split keyboards makes sense. Even if you find the look a shock, what you will not find shocking is that your hands will position themselves rather easily in this new arrangement. Even if you have learned on the old standard keyboard, this new update presents a pleasant departure from the past.
Much like the Cordless Navigator Duo, the hot buttons, even the base are somewhat familiar. The big differences are in the hot keys on the black and silver mouse that permit one button access to applications. For left handers, the shape is friendly enough for anyone regardless of their right or left hand preferences.
The difference in the mouse between the Navigator and Comfort come down to four buttons instead of two, and the configuration of the Logitech logo. The feel in the hand is firm, comfortable and makes so many other mice feel, well inferior.
It is in the area of peripherals that Logitech excels. Quiet keyboards, nice responsiveness, all of those niceties are here in abundance. What is also great is that installation is a breeze.
Simply follow the directions, plug in the appropriate devices, and you are on your way. There should be no real problems. Just make sure to configure the mouse and keyboard to fit your choices. It can be easy to forget to make allowances for the cordless mouse and keyboard.
Because most people use drawers to hold both their mice and keyboards, you may need to make arrangements for the base. In order for this to work, the black translucent base needs to be within eight inches from the keyboard and mouse in a direct line of vision. So do consider making adjustments for this. Until you start working cordlessly, it is easy to overlook that you must use a base that extends away from the PC.
Thankfully, Logitech has included four AA batteries to start you off on your new wire free world. That is another point that may not be common knowledge is that you need batteries. Being new to this, I was rather surprised on one level, and yet on another I expected it to be the case. For those use to wired mice, the batteries add a little bit of weight to the mouse.
Being that Logitech has employed the now common place optical mouse here, maneuvering is as simple as it gets.
If you have ever wondered if those funny shaped keyboards work, they do. If you have ever wanted to go wireless, there is no time like the present. Once you go wireless, you may never go back to cords.
Logitech has consistently produced well designed thoughtful peripherals. From their modern forward looking Web cams to their mice and keyboards, there is a lot here to recommend. Naturally, a hundred dollars does seem rather steep for something like a keyboard and mouse. When contrasted to $79.95 Navigator Duo, it is hard to rationalize the difference in price points. The advantages of the split keyboard are great, but do they justify a price hike like this? When you consider that both systems are similar, it does become harder to go for the more expensive version.
On the pro side, the Comfort is a just that, more comfortable. Plus, it looks sharp with its black and silver mouse and steep sloping black keyboard. Like so many peripherals in the Logitech line, there is nothing “goofy” about the look of any of their new lines.
The best way to decide is to take one for a test spin. If the current keyboard and mouse you are using feel like you're holding a brick in one hand and pressing on a loud typewriter with the other, you do owe it to yourself to give this keyboard and mouse combo a try. Once you do, you may never go back to the ordinary in peripherals again.
