Review of Logitech Cordless Navigator Duo

© 2003 by Kurt von Behrmann. All Rights Reserved.

One of the things I have noticed about PCs only after years of using one is that the mice and keyboards included are not always the best. While I have enjoyed certain machines over the years, it often feels like the mouse and keyboard are given the least amount of consideration. Considering that one interacts with a PC via these devices constantly, finding the right combination is actually more critical than you may realize. It took me a while to realize that not all mice and keyboards are created equal.

I am sure everyone has experienced loud keyboards, stiff mouse buttons and other irratations. Initially, it is easy to overlook them. Over time, you start to realize that these minor annoyances can turn into wasted time and considerable discomfort.

Logitech has come to the rescue with a cordless mouse and keyboard combo that not only ends the minor irritations that accompany haphazard peripherals, they have also made them wire free.

Depending on your preferences, Logitech also makes a split-key black keyboard and mouse combo as well, the Cordless Comfort Duo, as well as the Cordless Navigator Duo.

With its slightly off white color, muted metallics and smooth curving lines, I have to admit I am wondering how I managed so long juggling cords. There is a lot to be said for cordless peripherals. The advantages do not take long to discern.

However, there are a few caveats here. One is that the black base that allows for this wire free world ideally should be eight inches away from the keyboard and mouse. The downside to this is that most users have keyboards located on movable drawers that do not have a great deal of real estate on them. So positioning the base device becomes an issue. Fortunately, it is somewhat forgiving, but do be aware of that and figuring out a way to position it so that it is in a direct line with the keyboard and mouse.

Naturally, the Duo does include an optical mouse, which is excellent. If you have never used one, by all means free yourself of the rolling ball and go for the red glowing senor mouse.

If you are wondering what setup was like, the good news is that is pretty foolproof. Logitech includes everything you need to get up and running. This includes the four AA batteries you will need for the keyboard and mouse. Yes, that is right, batteries. Wire free computing does include batteries.

Like Logitech products I have used in the past, the set up was easy, and the instruction booklet clear and concise. I did run into a few delays in setting up the mouse, but that may have been my fault. Even with the delay, of just thirty seconds, the whole thing ran smoothly and effortlessly. Before I even had the chance to set everything up with the enclosed software, the mouse and keyboard were running without incident.

The included software that Logitech throws in is pretty much the basics. Musicmatch, a few add-ons and a few utilities, as well as drivers to take advantage of the keyboard's special buttons.

The Cordless Navigator Duo keyboard actually includes some rather nice touches. The F keys are labeled indicating their function. Also there are single buttons for access to e-mail, Web cam, MusicMatch, favorites and other places on the Web and off. All of these buttons are configurable so if you wish to use another messaging device aside from the default, you can do so.

The response of the keys is great. They are firm, have just enough give, and they are quiet. One of my biggest complaints with keyboards are those that are loud and unresponsive. If you have never splurged on a keyboard, you may want to do so. After working with a better designed keyboard than the one that shipped with my system, it is easy to see the difference, and how much faster typing can be.

The same holds true for the optical mouse. The design feels good in hand, and the scroll button rolls. There are no stuttering buttons, or unworkable angles. I have always been a fan of Logitech mice and this one is no exception. Plus, it looks good.

Summation

The idea of cordless keyboard and mice seems like a luxury. The reality is that they are not. With so many devices connected to a PC like still cameras, internet cams, scanners, printers, Ethernet wires, anything that can reduce the medusa like sprawl of wires is welcome relief.

With an easy setup, comfortable keyboards and ergonomically designed mice, The Logitech Cordless Navigator Duo is a good investment if you spend long hours working on a PC. Your fingers will thank you.
