When it comes to Web cameras, it seems Logitech has that all locked up with the new and improved Quick Cam Pro 4000. On the outside it looks similar to its immediate predecessor the Quick Cam Pro 3000, however, on the inside, there have been some big improvements.
The first improvement, although minor, is a significant one. It is regarding the base. One of the problems with the previous version was that the cable that connects the unit to the USB port had an irritating tendency to pull on the camera making it difficult to properly position the orb like camera. This time the base is more secure. The cable that connects the actual camera to your PC or Mac cannot inadvertently push the unit out of position. This is a welcome relief. One of the upsetting things about the Pro 3000 version was the cable’s pulling on the unit.
The more important improvement is the resolution. Adding a whopping 1,300,000 pixels to the sensor resolution, the picture quality is definitely crisp, sure and overall simply better than before on many levels. Logitech has always had a superior image quality with their cameras, and this improvement in resolution simply takes things to the next level. The detail is what you would expect, thus making video conferencing that much better. Naturally you can lower the resolution to suite your Web needs, but it is great having this much power.
As is the case with other Logitech products, this one comes with all of the wires, cables and drivers you need to get started on either your PC or Mac. The easy to use step by step software is the model of simplicity. The easy to follow booklet makes it so simple that anyone can open the box and get up and running in short order. About the only hard time you may have is with opening the box in which it ships. Once you have it out of the box, you are literally up and running.
The enclosed Logitech software has remained consistent from version 3000. So there is little to shock those upgrading from older models. Also included is Video Companion which allows America Online’s instant messaging software capable of video chatting. It also works with MSN Messenger.
The only problem I had with the software enclosed was with the Videowave software from Roxio. Videowave, in this case, is a scaled down version of a larger application that allows you to edit video on your PC. After installing the video editing software on my test system, my full version of Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator Digital Media Suite was rendered useless. I had to completely reinstall the software. I am not sure what caused this to happen. Unlike others who have complained about Easy CD Creator, I have never had a moment of trouble. That was until I used the scaled down Videowave software. So do beware of this issue if you are using Roxio full editions CD and DVD writing applications.
Other than the Videowave incident, the enclosed software from Logitech worked effortlessly. There were no conflicts, or problems during the install. It worked smoothly with my already installed Yahoo Messanger, MSN and Windows Messenger.
I have always been a fan of Logitech peripherals. When it comes to mice, keyboards and wireless versions of both, Logitech really delivers the goods. The same holds true for the Logitech Quick Cam Pro 4000. Having been perfectly happy with the older version I purchased, the Quick Cam Pro 3000, I was totally thrilled with this new version.
If you have been hesitant about upgrading, do not be. This is one upgrade well worth considering.
If you are new to Quick Cams, do yourself a favor and get this megapixel wonder. Your eyes and video friends will be amazed.
