Macromedia has been, and still is the software company of choice when it comes to Web design. Among the pros, it is the hands down winner. Although Adobe is hot on competing, and has come close, the pros still run to Dreamweaver MX.
Even if you are not a professional Web designer, there is much here to admire when it comes to Macromedia's Contribute v1. Even if you are skittish about first generation software, Contribute can be a real time saver not only for corporate users, but at home pros and Web designers as well.
What Contribute is in essence is a Web editing tool. It is not a Web creation tool, or animator, but a software application that allows you to edit Web pages live. Rather than go through the process of logging into your Web server, downloading files, editing and then placing them online again, which is a time consuming process, you can simply make your changes to the Web site within the Contribute browser.
The primary audience for Contribute is the corporate user who must make small changes to a Web site, but has neither time, the inclination, or in some cases the basic knowledge, of how to make edits to a Web site. The way Contribute works is based on the idea that one can simply visit a Web site, log in, and there are the pages ready to be edited. No need to download, upload or be aware of a complex Web page creation tool. In no time at all, one can alter a professional Web site without an intimate knowledge of HTML.
Logging and working the program is not that difficult. In my test run of Contribute, I was online and running without really paying a great deal of attention to the support documentation. For those who have had some basic understanding of the PC, Contribute is a breeze. However, for those for whom Contribute is intended this is about as easy as Web editing can possibly be.
Even if you are not working for a large corporation, I can see where individuals as well can benefit from an application like this one. This is particularly true when it comes to simple text editing. While there could be limitations regarding huge alterations, when it comes to editing on the fly, and time is of the essence, this could be a real asset.
From my experiences, Contribute worked smoothly particularly under Windows XP. At present there is no Mac version of this application. According to Macromedia, a Mac version is under development and should be due sometime later this year. Contribute can be purchased as an individual application, and it does come with the Macromedia MX suite. Do check the Macromedia Web site to check on the bundling of the application with others in the Macromedia product line.
Contribute is one of those tools that solves the age old problem of editing Web pages when more than one party is involved, and time is of the essence. By making the process this simple, time, energy and resources are saved. For individuals, making small changes to a Web page becomes a matter of logging in, correcting and logging out without the bother of using multiple applications. The time savings can be substantial. Contribute is well worth adding to any arsenal of Web development tools.
