There are certain applications that really do live up to their name. They perform as they should, free of complaints. Such is the case with the amazing SpamKiller 4 from McAfee.
Even if you are new to the Net it does not take long to become frustrated, annoyed and generally angry about spam. The digital equivalent to junk mail, spam in essence are those aggravating emails that advertise everything from beauty products to ways to make a million dollars in four days by helping someone overseas open a checking account. Always troublesome, and usually advertising something you do not need, want or even asked for, spam has turned many an email account into a trash bin filled with useless communications.
In the early days of the Internet, as I recall, spam was usually just a few emails. Now they are such a wide spread nuisance that they require software to control them from taking over your account.
While there are many products on the market designed to address junk email, SpamKiller 4 does the job about as well as it can be done. It actually works so easily that literally anyone can use it without too many issues. If you have ever set up an email account in Outlook, Outlook Express or Netscape, you have all the basic skills you need to set up this application.
The opening screen is a pretty basic affair. To the center are the open windows that allow you to view email that has been tagged as junk, as well as email that has been tagged as acceptable. To the far left are icons that denote such features as the settings, live email and so on and so forth. Much like a basic email program, SpamKiller works as an intermediary between you and the junk emails ready to assault your inbox.
Unlike some programs that act as add-ins, SpamKiller 4 is an independent application. It does not run inside of email clients like Eudora or Outlook Express. It operates like an email client itself filtering email prior to it entering your email program. Rather than work as a simple plug-in, SpamKiller becomes an intermediate mail client that allows you to filter your messages before they enter your inbox. What makes this process of filtering email even easier is that you can see your email so that you know exactly what you are editing. In time, and it does not take long, SpamKiller can be programmed to recognize your spam from legitimate email. The entire process is simple, easy and effective.
The biggest hurdle that any spam killing application must cross is that of accuracy. In my informal tests, Spam Killer is adept at differentiating the jewels from the junk. Even out of the box the built in filters that come with SpamKiller are dead on target when selecting email for deletion. One of the nice things about SpamKiller is that if it does make a mistake, which is actually rather rare, you can go back and fix the problem.
SpamKiller also comes with an add-on, the McAfee.com Security Center. What this small application does is serve as a gateway to other Mcafee applications on your PC as well as entrance to various sites on their Web site and access to features within various McAfee products. I have read that someone was critical of this little add-in and stated that it cannot be deleted. Contrary to that remark, one can delete the optional Security Center if one is so inclined. It ships with its own uninstaller.
With the advent of junk email, email viruses and the need for firewall protection, operating a PC means having more than just an Internet connection. From modest users to full time professionals, the big concern for everyone on the Net is security. Naturally a solid virus protection program regularly updated and a firewall are great insurance against catastrophes. It is always wise to cover all of your bases. Too often buyers manage to obtain virus protection and firewalls, but often fail to consider ways to control spam. As part of a complete computer safety solution, SpamKiller 4 should be a part of your PC safety kit. While there are many such applications on the market that deal with this concern, McAfee’s entry is by far the best.
The one important thing to keep in mind is that SpamKiller does not work with Web based email. While it does work with Hotmail accounts in Outlook Express, it does not work with Web based email.
