Spam has been an issue every since the Internet went mainstream. Now the problem makes it necessary to come up with ways to avert these pesky letters from filling your inbox. With McAfee’s latest Anti Spam program, SpamKiller version 5, 2004, this product works to keep unsolicited ads from proliferating in your e–mail application.
Unlike Symantec’s offering which operates as an add-on rather than an independent application, McAfee’s SpamKiller is a free standing program with integration into your e–mail program. In contrast to last year’s model, this one features a real interest in working in concert with your e–mail application. The only downside to McAfee’s solution is that you must enter your e–mail settings individually into the program.
This is in sharp contrast to the ease of use that marks Symantec’s offering. With their anti spam protection, there is little need to do much. Just install the program and you are instantly protected against problems. Unlike Symantec’s instant solution, McAfee requires a bit more involvement in setting the application up for use.
Working as part independent application and part integration with Outlook and Outlook Express, McAfee’s application is one of the few that protects mail clients like Hotmail, Eudora, Netscape and MSN Hotmail Web client. With the advantage of being an independent program, your e–mail is literally intercepted before it hits your particular e–mail client. The advantages of this system are clear cut. No bad emails actually enter your e–mail client.
A big plus for McAfee is the ability to work with protocols that include Pop3, MAPI, and MSN Hotmail. In keeping with the idea of integrating their online services with their stand alone programs, SpamKiller is now part of that same interface.
One of the big complaints with past versions of McAfee utlities was the difficulty in changing settings. It was if they were hidden from view. In this rendition, those problems have been erased by a clean tabbed interface that gives you instant access to settings. There is also a pie chart showing the stats on your spam e–mail.
Both price point wise, and hard drive wise, McAfee’s SpamKiller makes relatively modest demands on your system, and of course works well with other McAfee products.
The new interface refinements, the integration with Outlook, Outlook Express and Hotmail are compelling. The program has improved enough that existing users should seriously consider this new incarnation due to speed improvements and basically a program that is overall conceived with more details. This is not a minor upgrade for the previous version.
The choices among well known makers is now McAfee or Symantec. With the Symantec solution offering a simple set up that requires little intervention on the part of the end user, for those who value ease of installation and want to take a hands off approach to spam, Symantec’s solution may be the better choice. However, if Hotmail is a program that is important to you, then McAfee SpamKiller 5 has an advantage over others.
