With few exceptions, when you purchase a new scanner it always comes with bundled software. Sometimes this is a good thing, and incidentally a great value. The flip side of added software is that you wind up with a cut down version of a full scale application that is in some ways lacking. Lite versions of programs, those mini versions of their larger more full bodied siblings, have their place. The only problem with “lite” software is that there can be problems when you are working with processor intensive programs, particularly if you are doing optical character recognition scanning.
Depending on your computing needs, you may never need to use O.C.R. (optical character recognition) software. If so, most light versions can do the trick. But, if you scan entire documents, or need to enter hard copy into the digital divide, at some point you are going to need more full featured software to get the job done.
This is why Readiris Pro 9 from I.R.I.S software is one of those programs you should consider if you need to turn paper files into editable digital ones. What O.C.R. applications do is allow you to scan a paper document with text, such as a newspaper clipping or magazine article, and then turn that scanned image into one where you can edit the text in your word processor.
What separates so many O.C.R. applications from each other is their speed in transforming text that is in ink into editable text on a computer and their accuracy. It does no one any good if the application is fast, but sloppy. If your scanned image becomes too distorted you will wind up spending more time fixing the scanned image than if you simply typed the text yourself.
What distinguishes ReadIris Pro from so many others are swift speed from scanning to recognition and a very easy to use graphical user interface. Although the application ships with a printed manual, the installation, set up and actual scanning are basic enough that it is nearly intuitive. Compared to other applications, this one is easy if for no other reason than the fact that you have one main screen to work with at a time.
Instead of a flurry of confusing screens and obscure buttons placed here and there, ReadIris Pro 9 features the selection items on the right side of the screen and the options and scanning functions on the left.
By default the application opens with an O.C.R. wizard that walks through the process of scanning and application set up with just a few brief questions. Coming to the program having worked with applications that have a more detailed scanning recognition procedure, I was overwhelmed with how much simpler, and better, I.R.I.S software’s application actually is for experienced users. What I had to unlearn from past experiences was for me interesting. What this means for new users is a more streamlined working environment.
The major benefits here are speed, the program is fast, accurate, the program has to be one of the most effiecient I have worked with, along with support for the new Microsoft Office 2003. This is also coupled with complete support for PDF files as well. The fact that it can recognize 107 languages is also a bonus as well.
With an amazingly high accuracy rate, a swift scanning engine and the ability to scan both images and text with ease, these are sufficient reasons to consider this application. The evolution in O.C.R. software has come far in a relatively short period. Clearly, I.R.I.S. has not fallen asleep at developing a solid solution for those on the go, and those that need a well designed, but simple interface that does not interfere with the act of scanning.
