I have to give Propellerhead Software credit for creating some of the best packaging of a software program I have ever seen. This Swedish company knows how to present their software, and their interface is nothing short of a marvel.
This is particularly true with Reason 2.5. Coming in a military green and orange box, the three CDs included with the application show some highly sophisticated design. From the instruction manual to the actual serial number, printed on a special credit card looking plate, there is a sense that you have purchased something special, distinctive and unique.
For those not familiar with Propellerhead or Reason, the company that produces Reason 2.5 is known among those in the music creation as the maker of some highly specialized high quality music software. What reason is is a collection of several devices. Synthesizers, drum machines, ReCycle based loop player, mixer, effects, pattern sequencer and definitely more.
Unlike some software, which seems designed to confuse you rather than aid you, Reason 2.5 has a relatively rudimentary set-up for an application of this diversity. It does require that you install all three of the CDs in order to use the program. So do not forget to keep track of the whole set or you will not be able to use the program.
The features and layout of Reason are incredible. The stand out feature of the program is the efficient layout of the program’s workspace. The Device Rack had a realistic look to it, and the unlimited amount of add on devices are a plus for this extensive program. The design of the back panel was outstanding. I do have to admit when it comes to a realistic look, Reason sure has that aspect of graphical user interface design down to a fine art. It was nice to be able to run simulated cords to each of the different devices to control each sound and their parameters.
The number of instruments and miscellaneous devices offered with the program were more than what you might expect. All device instruments and multi effects processors were easy to use and very compatible with my test midi controller keyboard.
After doing a little research, I discovered that E-Lab created all of the sounds for this rendition of Reason.
The onboard sequencer and piano roll were extremely similar to the ones in Fruity-Loops, now FL studio. The key difference is that Reason’s are much easier to use with no errors and fewer problems. When recording a melody or pattern, there are no delay times with sending midi into the program's sequencer and or playback of external devices. The copy, cut, paste feature was easier to work with than other similar applications.
Importing and exporting sound files were right on the money with the Acid and Sound Forge Programs. There were some sound problems when I added an exported WAV file to Adobe Premier Pro.
Including both a Mac version and a Windows version on the same disc, which is something of a rarity in current applications, but always welcome, Propellerhead has done an exemplary job in creating high end software for professional musicians. Including a three CD set, lush packaging and a relatively easy to use application, this is the one stop for those really serious about this type of software. I do recommend the application, but with the caveat being that you are very serious about music creation. For the pros, this is the ultimate in this genre.
