The registry is one of those mysterious, and yet very, essential part of Windows. When it is operating and well maintained, computing becomes a dream. When it fails, things quickly turn to mud fast. If the registry is not kept in prime condition, not only do you risk instability and crashes, your system can come to a grinding halt.
For those that want to keep the registry up to date, but do not want to bother with the fine print, Registry Mechanic has much to recommend it for the occasional user that needs a Registry fix on the fly.
The scan windows itself is broken down into categories for ease of use. One can also customize the subjects that Registry Mechanic should, or should not fix. Such things as custom controls, start up programs, add/remove programs, short cuts, shared programs, device drivers and other such segments of your PC are avaiable to check, or not check as you see fit.
The only downside, is that there is not automatic update feature. When updates come around, you do have to visit the site directly. This is not a major flaw, but it does seem odd that the main interface does not feature a direct download option to update the program without opening your browser.
In operation, Registry Mechanic is fast, efficient and non invasive. For those that crave more control over their registry settings, Registry Mechanic may leave you wanting. This small utility is designed with the idea of ease of use in mind. If what you need is a full featured editor, you are not the prime audience for this convenient application.
For those that do not have utility suites like Vcom's System Suite 4, or Norton Utilities may do well to find this utility installed. Also, for those that want a simple direct way to streamline their registry without worrying about losing data, this is a good find for those that do not want to get technical about the registry. An added benefit of this program is that it does back up the registry in the even that trouble happens. It never hurts having extra security. Primarily, this is a file utility for those that don' t like to know that much about the inner workings of their pc and just want to get up and running. Keeping those limits in mind, this is one solid little application.
For those that want more control, and more options, one may be better served by the easy to use, but power oriented, Reg Cleaner. For newbies who do not have utility suites installed, or find existing ones too detail oriented, this could be an excellent option.
