Lately the marketplace has been filling up with assorted USB flash drives. More popular in Asia than in the U.S., in places where PC's are not commonplace, the portable USB drive is an indispensable peripheral. For those in need of more disk space than a diminutive diskette can hold, which is already obsolete in most circles, but more flexibility to record and rewrite than a CD, the flash drive is a convenient solution for storage on the go.
With more assorted solutions than flavors of ice cream, the lot to choose from is wide. Candy colored devices, key chain devices, designers and engineers have fabricated a plethora of combinations, colors and shapes for the flash drive. Unfortunately some of those concoctions look frail and fragile rather than durable and portable. Finding a nice balance between the two sits the titanium flash drive from SanDisk, the Cruzer.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In the case of this device, you really have to see it to appreciate its true elegance. With a blue hued glowing light to indicate operation, the Titanium Cruzer is a study in simplicity in a small container. Measuring roughly three inches long, not even one inch wide and two eights of an inch tall, this is a small unit. The titanium coated exterior gives it a hard looking appearance as well as a sturdy feel. This is one device that does not feel, or look, as if it will fall apart in your hands. It also remains so light it can easily be worn without fear of damage. The unit ships with a lanyard and key chain for even easier portability.
With some incredibly fast write and rewrite times, and it is noticeable, the unit performs as expected and rather quickly. The stats for the device are as intriguing as its cool metallic appearance. Capable of transferring three times faster than other USB devices, with 15 MB per sec read and 13 MB per second write speeds, the device has the kind of swift action one would expect. It can also withstand a force of up to 2000 pounds.
The Cruzer reviewed ships with Cruzer Lock, and an encryption program, Cruzer Sync, which allows synchronization with MS Outlook.
As an arresting way to transfer files, Sandisk's long time experience with card readers places it ahead of the pack. This is certainly a peripheral with a nice head turning quotient that performs exceptionally well.
The line of devices includes the following flavors:
The SanDisk Cruzer Mini will now be available in 2 and 4 gigabyte (GB) models and the SanDisk Cruzer Micro will have 1GB and 2GB models. Also, The Cruzer Titanium, which has a titanium-coated shell and is designed to withstand harsh working environments and operating conditions, will be offered in a 1GB capacity and the 512 MB version reviewed here.
Apart from their new "outfits," the Cruzer Micros come preloaded with valuable portable software programs. These include CruzerLock" 2, a data file encryption program- CruzerSync", which synchronizes with Outlook data; and Cruzer PocketCache", which allows for file backups with minimal memory consumption. The last two are offered as trial versions on Cruzer Micros and Cruzer Minis, and full versions on The Cruzer Titanium, reviewed here.
Capacities offered for the SanDisk CruzerMini also include 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB, and for the SanDisk Cruer Titanium, 512MB.
What can I say other than this is about as good as it gets with USB flash drives. Consider this the Rolls Royce of its market. With great aesthetics, sturdy design, a decent software compliment, there is a lot going on here to make this a must have for those seeking the best flash drive solution anywhere.
