There are some programs that immediately make sense. They fill a void, or perform an obvious function better than the competition, there are some applications that automatically reveal themselves as essential.
If you have ever had to perform a “screen capture” on a PC, then you have an instant idea of what the job entails. Even after I had been working with the PC for several years, the elusive screen capture utility revealed its essential nature when I began using it professionally. It was always a cumbersome process.
The normal way to capture an image on the screen involves pressing the Print Screen button located on the far upper right on most standard keyboards. With it, the entire contents of the screen are captured. In order to fine tune the captured image, one usually opens a digital image editing program to select whatever parts of the screen capture one wishes to work with if it does not involve the entire screen.
What Snagit cleverly does is remove the need to capture and perform basic editing with two or more programs. Effectively it allows you to select what parts of the screen you wish to capture and then swiftly offers you the option of how to save the newly captured image. Not only does this remove the need to open a full editing program, it offers convenient accurate precise selection that the Print Screen key cannot.
Not only does Snagit offer a variety of screen capturing options, it also offers the ability to add arrows, text and assorted other visual elements to the captured image. Naturally, you can do all of this with any adequate image editing program. There is nothing magical about this. Where the genius comes is in the way that you can improve the speed and accuracy of a capture.
For those working on a deadline, or anyone in need of a fast accurate efficient way to handle a screen capture, this is a superb solution that manages to cover all of the basics.
Included with SnagIt are browsing functions, a rather comprehensive editor and Bezier line drawing capability. Nearly everything most people need in a screen capture program is here. Clearly it cannot anticipate the most detailed uses, but it comes very close.
For those that have to use screen captures often, this is one of those indispensable tools that should be every artist's, writer's and graphic designer’s arsenal. The practicle uses are numerous. If you need to capture a screen image, and who does not, this is an excellent utility.
