Review of Web Site Design Made Easy

There are plenty of books out there that tell you how to use a particular piece of software to create Web pages and sites. But finding one that really shows you the underlying nuts and bolts can be difficult. This book gives you that information and presents it in a style that any computer user can understand.

Rather than relying on software to design the pages, this book shows you the HTML code needed to create a very good Web site. Even for users who plan to move on to something like FrontPage or Dreamweaver, it is a good idea to understand the code being created. And if you understand it well, you might find it quicker to create the sites with code. Code editors like HomeSite can automate many of the tasks for you so you don't have to remember every single attribute.

Once the basics are mastered, you'll get to more advanced topics. These include framed sites, data collection forms, multimedia and more. You'll also learn how to create a style sheet for controlling the formatting of the site. One of the best chapters gives you snippets of code for doing lots of neat things. Before the end, you'll learn to upload the files to a server, information about good design, site promotion tip and important information about the Web. The book finishes with an excellent set of appendices including a very detailed glossary and lots of places to learn more. Plus there are charts of Web safe colors, characters and tag attributes.

The format of the book itself is very well done. It is spiral bound so it folds flat. All pages have some color with screen shots being in full color. The writing is very easy to follow and isn't as dry as most books on this subject. Each chapter ends with a quiz and some exercises. So the book could be easily used in the classroom as well.

For someone who has never developed a Web site, this book is an excellent place to start. Advanced users may not glean as much information from the book, but it still provides a great reference if you've forgotten how to do something in particular. I'm in the advanced category and I'll still keep the book handy for the information in the appendices if nothing else.
