Set-up is so easy the channels are automatically programmed when you connect the antenna, plug in the VCR, and turn it on.

The Panasonic PV-9451 is an excellent performer loaded with features that make it fun and easy to use. Even without reading the instructions, we had this straightforward product up and running in just a few minutes. This VCR sets the time automatically on the front panel and internal clock displays. (The VCR grabs the data from the local PBS broadcast.) Recording a program is easy with the VCR Plus+ feature; TV Guide and many newspapers list a code number for each program and you simply key the number of your desired program into the VCR.

Thanks to Panasonic's "Dynamorphous" recording heads, pictures held up well even when blown up on a big-screen projection TV and when recording on the slowest (SLP) speed. Hi-fi soundtracks (of action flicks and new concert video compilations) came across full bodied and clean.

The onscreen operating menu is another big help in getting the show up and running. It works smoothly with Panasonic's Light Tower remote, which hosts big buttons that glow in the dark when you hit the Light Bulb button.

Trick play features are decent on this economically priced VCR. We loved the 1 Minute button, which skips through a 60-second commercial in just eight seconds while offering video scanning onscreen. The PV-9451 has only one fast-forward/reverse speed and one slow-motion speed. In addition, this VCR offers index searching and scanning that pauses at the start of each recording segment on a tape. You can also call up an onscreen program index that shows the time, date, channel, and type (optional) of every timed recording made on a tape, as long as the cassette is in the machine. You can record brief index notes at the opening of tape segments.

We have one minor complaint about this VCR: Panasonic's fine-edged recording/playback heads for the SLP mode are excellent if you are watching a slow-speed recording, but they sometimes mistrack when you are watching super long play (SLP) recordings made on older decks. However, standard play tapes--including prerecorded rental tapes--were excellent.

With its great picture quality, quick setup, front audio-video inputs, and fantastic price, the Panasonic PV-V4021 VCR is a nice little unit that most people will find not only suits their video viewing and recording needs, but does so with very little fuss. As this piece is definitely not intended for videophiles, we tested the PV-V4021 using an inexpensive TV with mono sound and a coaxial video hookup.

We had the unit set up and ready to go in about four minutes. A thin but functional coaxial cable and batteries for the adequate remote control are included, and we were up and running without having to consult the well-written instruction manual.

With four heads working on its behalf, the PV-V4021 delivers a crisp, clear picture from the moment you hit Play. The remote's key buttons--Play, Rewind, Fast Forward, and Stop--are intuitively placed in a diamond pattern and are larger than the other buttons for easy access. However, the Eject key is hidden in the grid of other control buttons, and without a backlight it was easier to get out of the chair and eject tapes by hand than grope around for the button. Additionally, we were unable to set the remote so it would control our TV's volume, despite claims of compatibility and clear instructions in the manual.

We tested the unit's record function by plugging a camcorder's output into the convenient AV inputs on the unit's front panel. Before recording, you must select the appropriate input (front or back) using the remote control. The resulting second-generation tape turned out quite well, easily comparable to the quality of tapes from units costing twice the price of the PV-V4021.

A final thing to consider is the unit's build quality. While we had no disasters, the rewind function elicited a terrible straining sound and slowed to a crawl almost immediately, and the rear panel that houses the AV jacks was flimsy enough to cause some concern when we were connecting and disconnecting our cables.

At the end of the day, however, the Panasonic PV-V4021 really is a nice VCR for casual movie viewing and program recording. Despite our reservations, its good qualities and price tag address the concerns of its potential audience quite well. --Erik Hammen

The Sony SLV-679HF is a tough little machine that offers all of the basic features as well as VCR Plus+ technology. The unit includes a Sony-brand universal remote that is more streamlined than many remotes. However, the Stop, Rewind, Fast-Forward, and Pause buttons are so slim it's possible they'd wear out in the hands of the most hardcore remote-control fanatics.

The machine was simple to hook up to an antenna and TV. The setup features--available in English, Spanish, and French--were simple to navigate via easy-to-view on-screen graphics. The VCR's electronic clock feature is well lit for late-night viewing. The front panel display also contains an oversized icon of a tape, which displays when a video is stationary, playing, or rewinding. The SLV-679HF also displays some information on screen. For example, an on-screen clock lets you know how many minutes have passed since you began playing the tape--a great feature for viewers who want to keep track of a particular scene.

The Sony SLV-679HF handled moving from the Play to Fast-Forward or Rewind positions fairly efficiently, taking just over one second to switch functions. However, you can really hear the gears cranking during the switch. We found the "pause" feature to be especially impressive; the picture held steady and did not jump jerkily like many machines. Under most circumstances, VCRs are placed in stable, steady environments, such as in an entertainment center. However, we were impressed that the Sony SLV-679HF was able to continue chugging away in the Play mode when we placed it on its side. This is good news if you have young kids or if you're an overly enthusiastic sports fans.

The audio on this unit is impressive--typical for a hi-fi stereo unit. The SLV-679HF also includes VCR Plus+, an on-screen programming guide that works in conjunction with the PlusCode numbers published in newspaper TV listings. Simply enter a program's corresponding PlusCode number into the unit via the remote and the VCR timer automatically sets itself to record that program. However, while the VCR Plus+ feature may make your life easier in the long run, learning how to use this technology will most likely send you to the user's manual for the first few attempts.
