User Features

This Wave model has four exterior blades that can be accessed even while the tool is closed. (Note: the knife blade can only be opened when the tool is closed.) You can open the blades with one hand by placing your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade, and rotating until the knife is fully extended. This securely engages the locking mechanism.

The saw and file both have nail nicks at their tips for easy access. The locking mechanism is marked with a padlock symbol on the tool itself. To unlock the blades, all you have to do is press the locking mechanism toward the handle until the blade slides past the lock.

Accessing the interior features is a snap, too -- just grip the handles and rotate them open. Each interior blade can be opened by using the nail nicks. The scissors extend in the very same way, and they lock into place for secure, safe use. And of course, it's easy to change the tool bits, too. Just remove the bit from the driver and pop a new one into place.

About the SpeedSafe System
The patented SpeedSafe knife-opening system helps users open the knife by applying manual pressure to the thumb stud or blade protrusion. The heart of the SpeedSafe system--which is built into many of Kershaw's best-selling knives--is its torsion bar, which keeps gravity from opening the knife. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its half-moon track and takes over, smoothly opening the blade and locking it into position, ready for use. Although they may look similar at first glance, SpeedSafe knives are not considered switchblades. Unlike a switchblade, SpeedSafe knives do not deploy with the push of a button in the handle or by gravity alone. Instead, the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance, putting the knives outside the federal definition of a switchblade. A master of his trade, Ken Onion is one of the most sought-after custom knife makers in the industry. Ken's involvement in the knife trade dates back to his time in Palestine, West Virginia, where he was inspired at the age of 12 by Vernon Ott, a local blacksmith and maker of garden tools and knives. How KA-BAR Knives Are Made Making a quality KA-BAR product requires the talent of experienced craftspeople performing dozens of processes with precision and skill. Each knife undergoes specific manufacturing processes to ensure corrosion resistance, strength, edge-holding ability, and an out-of-the-box, razor-sharp cutting edge. Some of these manufacturing processes are highlighted below.

• Blanking: Using a 100-ton blanking press, KA-BAR can blank out nearly 9,000 blades in one full day of operation.
• Tang Stamping: Tang stamping is often used to identify a product's manufacturer, the country in which the product was made, and an item number.
• Heat Treating: To begin the three-step heat-treat process of stainless-steel blades, KA-BAR first runs the blades through a 70-foot conveyor oven that takes approximately one hour to cycle.
• Cryogenic Quenching: The second step in a three-phrase heat-treat process, KA-BAR cryogenically freezes its stainless-steel blades to -120 degrees F to optimize blade performance.
• Tempering: Tempering stainless-steel blades for approximately seven hours in a walk-in oven enhances steel toughness. KA-BAR is well known for its three-phase heat-treat process in which tempering is the last step.
• Grinding: KA-BAR knives feature flat- or hollow-ground blades. Flat grinds are best for jobs in which there will be great lateral stress. Hollow grinds provide a fine, extremely sharp edge that is perfect for more delicate tasks.
• Leather Handle Compression: KA-BAR's famous oval-shaped leather handle construction is accomplished by compressing leather washers onto the tang, shaping and coloring them, and then fastening them on with a pinned-on butt cap.

Key User Features

The Blast features all-locking blades. To release the interior blades, all you have to do is press the grooved portion of the push-lock button and carefully rotate the blade. The regular and hard-wire cutters are located within the plier jaws, and the straight knife blades may be easily sharpened using standard sharpening methods.

To access the interior features of the Blast, just grip the handles and swing them open. Each interior blade can be opened using the nail nicks, and so can the scissors. When the scissors are fully extended, they lock securely into place for safety and ease of use.

Optional Accessories (not included)

The Removable Bit Driver Accessory is sold separately, and makes a great addition to the Blast multitool. This removable bit driver works by installing right on top of the integrated Phillips screwdriver blade. You can also add the Universal Tool Adapter to your Blast arsenal. This adapter is a standard 1/4-inch hex drive that locks in three positions.
