First off, it comes with two nosepieces, one for framing and one for metal connector applications. This will save you a couple hundred bucks by eliminating the need to buy a dedicated metal connector nailer. It fires 21-degree plastic-collated full round head stick nails, in lengths of 2 to 3-1/2 inches and shank diameters of .113 to .162 inches. With the metal connector attachment, you'll need 23-degree plastic-collated full round head metal connector nails, 1-1/2 or 2-1/2 inches and shank diameters of .131, .148 and .162 inches - but with the metal connectors, you can load just one stick at a time.

The nosepiece conversion is quick and easy, provided you haven't installed the included Smart Trigger (this one is black), which lets you fire in a bump mode, because the metal connector feature can only be used with the factory-installed sequential trigger (the gray one). Nevertheless, it's a money-saving feature we love.

The depth-of-drive is a pleasure instead of a chore, because it's regulated by Bostitch's patented push-button method. After you depress the button, you physically slide the contact arm and release the button. Loading fasteners also is a two-second task - pull the latch back, drop the nails in, let the latch go, and you're ready to work. They couldn't have made it easier. And here's a neat little thing they designed into the gun: a notch at 16 inches, so all you need for on-center work is, well, the nailer.

The gun itself is made of lightweight magnesium, so it's both light and rugged, and it won't take a terrible toll on your arms, shoulders and back, even after a day of putting up sheathing, siding, trusses, fencing or even a backyard deck. This one's a bit of a paradox: The do-it-yourselfer might pass by this compressor in favor of an oil-free, no-maintenance model, but it's actually one of the best on the market for the homeowner, hobbyist and weekend warrior.

There are three factors that made us form this opinion. First, it's the quietest compressor we've ever encountered. It's a remarkable departure in a genre of tools that normally force you to suspend conversation while it's cycling. The MAC700 puts out 80 decibels, according to the folks at Makita, and when you compare that to the 90 and up you get from most units, that's practically a hum. So we like this for household use, especially in a basement shop.

Next on our list of pluses for the DIY-er is the low-amp draw, and with that, fewer trips to the breaker box and less chance of premature motor failure. The other feature that won us over is the easy-on-the-hand lever handle ball valve that saves your knuckles when you drain the tank. It's also got a really fast cycle, so by the time you take a sip of water, you're ready to work again.

So small, so light, but so powerful-—what a delight to use. It's just perfect for the professional upholsterer and the home do-it-yourselfer, too. Because it's so compact, it fits nicely into tight spaces, and its super light weight means no fatigue, even in the awkward positions upholsters can find themselves. We didn't experience any misfires or jams, but if they happen, just release the magazine and the driver blade guide retracts. Whether you're a professional flooring installer or a weekend do-it-yourself warrior with a load of hardwood flooring staring at you, this nailer is far and away one of the best ways to get the job done.

Yes, it's spendy, especially if you're a homeowner just planning to do a couple of rooms. But if you weigh the cost of a professional installation, you come out miles ahead doing it yourself, even with this purchase, and you can work at your own pace instead of rushing a rental back to the store. If price is an obstacle, you might consider a manual nailer; you'll pay about half as much, but you'll do more than twice the work!

Professionals love this model, and for good reason. It's made of aircraft-grade aluminum, so it's light and strong. Your compressor needs to run between 60 and 100 psi, but best performance came in between 70 and 90 psi. There's practically no learning curve, so with just a light tap of the mallet, you'll be cruising along your flooring with 420 inch-pounds of nailing pressure.

The Bostitch story
Originally known as the Boston Wire Stitcher® Company, the first syllables of the words "Boston" and "Stitcher" were joined to make "Bostitch®", and the name was adopted for product use after the manufacture of machines began. Thomas Briggs, the founder, invented in 1896 a new kind of user friendly Wire Stitcher designed for fastening books, calendars, checks, hat boxes, etc. This machine made a staple or stitch as it was called from a coil of wire. It was called the Boston Wire Stitcher and the company was named the Boston Wire Stitcher Company. In 1903 the company invented a foot operated stapling machine that used pre-formed staples. These staples were not collated but had to be slid off of a track into the magazine of the machine. Later they were collated with paper and then glue.
