It's a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dog's nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it. Enter Dremel's cordless groomer, a quiet, battery-powered rotary tool that gently grinds down your pet's nails without cutting. We happen to know a particular hound named Sophie who's endured more than her share of cracked nails and bleeding nail beds, the result of the standard guillotine-type nail trimmers. Though she was a bit wary of the Dremel, she sniffed at it and decided it was harmless. Then we set it on the floor and turned it on. Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on. The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us. We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time. If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the ½-inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Even the least artistic among us can have the coolest jack-o'-lanterns in the neighborhood this year with Dremel's pumpkin- carving kit. It's a neat, buzzy little unit that carves off layers of pumpkin flesh to let the light glow through. It isn't meant to cut all the way through the pumpkin, and the effect is perfectly spooky. Powered by four AA batteries, it's got two speeds for superior pumpkin-stock removal, 6,000 and 12,000 rpm, so it's not a child's toy.

Use a knife to cut a lid for your pumpkin. Angle the knife towards the center of the pumpkin as you cut so that the lid will rest on top of the pumpkin after the cut has been made.
Use a large spoon to clean out the entire inside of the pumpkin. It is best if the walls of your pumpkin are approximately 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick.

Based on the size of your pumpkin, you can enlarge or reduce the size of your template using a copy machine if needed. Using spray-on adhesive, apply your template to the pumpkin.

Turn the tool on low and begin tracing the areas to be removed.
You can use the high setting for large area material removal. The key is to remove approximately the same amount of material on your whole pumpkin to achieve a uniform depth.

Once you've finished, remove the paper template, place a light source, such as a candle, in the pumpkin, dim the lights, and see how well the light shines through your carving.

We know it sounds clichéd, but we have to say it: The Dremel's capabilities are limited only by your imagination and innovation. The MultiPro rotary tool is the handful of power behind a thousand uses, with supreme control and ergonomic comfort and, truth be told, its tremendous fun to use. Its five speed sets range from 5,000 to a router-like 35,000 rpm, and combined with a seemingly endless array of bits and attachments, you can carve, grind, polish, trim, sand, cut a wide range of material, shape, clean, remove grout, smooth, drill, rout, sculpt, sharpen, engrave, strip finishes - kind of like being a superhero with gadgets that never end. The secret ingredient is the speed. With a bit moving at 35,000 rpm, you don't need to lean into the job at all; on the contrary, we found a light touch to be the most effective, and the tool does the work for you. Control is superb, thanks to a comfortable housing and excellent balance whether you're doing detail work with a pencil-like grip or grasping the tool like a tennis racquet. It's light as a feather at just about a pound, so even working at shoulder height or above is no chore. Bit change is fast and easy; the collet locks with a button and the wrench stores on board. This set comes with 10 bits to get you started, but have a look at other accessory sets too, because once you get this Dremel in hand, it's addictive. You'll want to pick up the flex shaft and right-angle attachments for cramped quarters, add on a router-type base, and maybe even get the stand that turns the tool into a mini drill press.
