Powerful 1-1/2 Horsepower Motor
The Powermatic 31A is a solid, full-feature sanding machine that has a 1-1/2 horsepower TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor mounted within the enclosed base cabinet. The 31A comes wired for 115-volt, 12-amp, one-Ph current, yet it can be converted to use 230-volt, six-amp power for greater versatility.

The motor delivers power to the belt and disc units via a pair of balanced pulleys and a V-belt. The belt is easily accessible for tensioning adjustments through a large door on the rear of the base cabinet.

Fully Welded Base Cabinet for Stability
The fully welded, all-steel enclosed base cabinet measures 20.0 x 27.5 x 17.25 inches (W x H x D), providing a stable platform for the entire machine in addition to enclosing and protecting the motor and dust collection chute.

The height of the base cabinet places the disc sanding table 34.5 inches off the floor and the belt (in the horizontal position) to 37 inches. These heights plus the total weight (246 pounds) and stability of the cabinet make the Powermatic 31A easy and comfortable to work with.

Cast-Iron Table Provides Ample Workspace
A large 17.25- by 9.0-inch cast-iron table provides a solid, spacious platform that both supports and stabilizes even the largest project pieces.

The table tilts up to 45 degrees and is secured by large hand wheels on either side. A full-sized miter slot accepts the included miter gauge, making it easy to build specialty jigs.

The Powermatic 31A offers true versatility. First, the belt can be used in both the horizontal and vertical positions--and just about any angle in between. The multipurpose cast-iron table allows you to work at different angles, giving you greater project flexibility. You can also remove the top guard for contour sanding jobs.

Whether you're removing a large amount of stock or just making the finest changes, this Jet belt/disc sander is definitely up to the task. A 3/4-horsepower motor supplies all the power you need for serious stock removal, and the platen has a graphite sheet that helps keep things cool, so you get more life out of both the sander and the belts.

The 9-inch disc sander's table is a generous 7-1/2-by-12-inch cast iron surface, with preset stops at 45 and 90 degrees for reliable angles and nice miter gauge T-slots parallel and perpendicular to the disc. But even better, we think, is the belt sander that operates both horizontally and vertically -- and everywhere in between. The table isn't as large as that of the disc sander, but it's really not necessary, and it functions nicely as a work stop in the horizontal position. The only thing we don't like -- and it's a matter of preference, really -- is that we found the power switch awkward to reach when using the belt sander in the flat position, as it's on the other side of the tool.

Adjustments are all quick and easy, especially changing out the belt. All it takes is a flip of the quick-release belt tension lever, and you'll be back to work in a minute. Tracking is an easy task as well, one we appreciate that Jet made so simple. First, pull up the handle of the tracking lock, then just turn the adjusting knob until the belt is centered on the platen. Lock the handle again, but watch carefully: You may need to fine-tune with the knob again, as the belt tends to shift slightly to the left when the tracking lock is engaged again. Once centered, though, the belt will stay put, thanks to the rubber-coated drive drum that keeps a good grip on the sanding belt.

One of the things we liked best about this sander is its clean dust-collection setup. One 4-inch port on the base directs the lion's share of sawdust into your system, whether you're using the belt or the disc. There's even an integrated blast gate to direct the suction to whichever sander you're working.

This is a hefty machine, and though it's possible to bolt it to a workbench or buy a separate stand for it, it feels very stable when simply placed on a flat surface like a workbench, and in a smaller shop, that's a great advantage.

Jet's disk-and-belt-sander combination brings professional-quality sanding to any shop setting. Set on an open steel stand, both tools run off a center-balanced, fully encased induction motor that's prewired for 115-volt outlets. This system has a single four-inch dust port on the back of the base that evacuates debris from both the disc and belt through specially designed shrouds that maximize its effectiveness.

Clever and Efficient Disc Section Design
The nine-inch diameter disc spins at 1,725 RPM (no load) and accepts adhesive-backed discs. Additionally, the heavy-duty disc plate is machined flat for super-smooth sanding and resists warping or deflection under all normal sanding conditions. To enhance dust collection and safety, a hinged door covers the lower portion of the sanding disc. Opening the door provides easy access to the complete disc for replacement of the abrasive.

Disc Table Mount for Increased Versatility

Miter Gauge and Pivoting Fence for User-Friendly Operation
The JSG-96OS comes with a full-featured miter gauge, and a fence measuring 5.5 x 2 inches tall to securely hold stock or attach shop-made jigs. This fence also pivots 60 degrees to the right or left and is locked with the twist of the push handle. Finally, the miter gauge has a steel guide bar fitted with a T-slot follower that prevents lifting or rocking during sanding.
