View larger. | Get In On the Bakugan Craze For those who are unfamiliar, Bakugan is an inventive strategy game based on the popular anime TV series, "Bakugan: Battle Brawlers." It pits a variety of "Bakugan warriors" against each other for points. The Bakugan themselves are magnetic, spring-loaded marbles that -- when exposed to a metal "gate card" -- burst open to reveal a fearsome warrior. The mission of the Bakugan strategy game is to capture the opponent's metal gate cards. This is achieved by rolling your Bakugan warriors onto these cards and doing battle with defending enemy Bakugan. The game involves a surprising amount of strategy, and features various tactical cards and trap pieces that help protect your Bakugan warriors. Room for the Imagination
This game combines skill (aiming your Bakugan) with strategy (placement of the cards). Players also enjoy the way the warriors pop open on the magnetic cards -- although sometimes they do it even when they don't land on the cards. Players unfamiliar with the TV show, may feel a little lost at first in the world of Bakugan. But with the help of the colorful, animated Bakugan Web site, they will get what the game is about and how to play. Even without the official strategy game, Bakugan toys are enjoyable and can be played with like regular action figures. This particular set contains one Bakugan warrior (named Neo Dragonoid) and six Bakugan traps (Grakas Hound, Dark Hound, Grafias, Brachium, Spitarm and SpyderFencer.) These pieces can be combined together to form the massive Maxus Dragonoid monster. The transformation process is a bit complicated, but the set includes clear instructions that make assembly easy. The assembled Dragonoid is a unique toy, although a bit unwieldy -- if not positioned correctly, he will easily fall down. Each of the seven Bakugan that compose Dragonoid can be used individually in the strategy game. Avid players will be happy to know that this set also includes a special ability card, which will come in handy when you're devising a strategy to topple your enemy. Just keep in mind that, in order to play Bakugan properly, you'll need several other Bakugan marbles/cards that are not included in this package. At over a foot in height, Devastator is one of the largest Transformers toys ever made.
View larger. | Your Own Transformers Experience Staying true to the movie, Devastator is massive, standing well over a foot in height and dwarfing most other Transformers toys. He is a solid, heavy, and well-built toy. Pulling a lever on his chest causes his mouth (called the Vortex Grinder) to light up with bright, neon-green LED lights. The lever also triggers battle sounds and quotes taken straight from the movie. Devastator isn't the most flexible toy around. Because of his size, he can be a bit cumbersome to play with. However, his elbows and knees are articulated, which makes him easier to position and balance. He also has realistic details, which gives him value as a collector's replica. Devastator consists of six smaller construction vehicles: the Constructicons. These detailed vehicles are painted in earthy colors suited for their rough construction jobs. Together, the Constructicons form a complete construction team. There is a bulldozer, a dump truck, an excavator, a scoop loader, a mixer and a crawler crane. They prove to be very maneuverable on a hard surface, able to make hairpin turns easily. However, it should be noted that, unlike their film counterparts, these vehicles do not transform into robots individually. An Enjoyable, Challenging Assembly
Devastator might be one of the biggest transformers around, but it's also one of the most difficult to put together. Parents should be aware that the Devastator requires some degree of finesse to assemble -- and in some cases, strength. Some of the snapping parts are especially tricky to connect together, and prove difficult to pry apart. The toy is labeled as a Level 4 conversion, so younger children will have difficulty converting the toy by themselves. It took our tester (an experienced Transformer player) nearly 15 minutes to figure everything out. Still, putting the toy together should provide a constructive challenge for older kids. The Bakugan Launcher is an optional accessory that adds excitement to the game Bakugan Battle Brawlers. There are no instructions with the optional Bakugan Launcher, which is made of sturdy, lightweight plastic. But it's a straightforward accessory: simply load the Bakugan and fire away! There are two additional Bakugan compartments on either side of the launcher. The wrist strap is a great accessory that your child can use to help steady the launcher as he fires. Exciting Magnetic Action
The Bakugan Launcher has three shooting modes ("curve," "angle, and "distance"). It holds three Bakugan, and straps to your child's wrist -- just like Dan's! Though kids can roll the Bakugan just like marbles, the Launcher adds an element of excitement to their Bakugan battles. Room for the Imagination
Though we thought the launcher was a great accessory, but our attempts to fire it proved somewhat difficult. Instructions would have helped. If you and your child can figure it out how to fire it effectively -- especially how to use the three shooting modes -- the launcher is sure to increase their enjoyment of the game and add variety to their play.

While R2 responded to simple commands with no problems, we had difficulty getting him to respond reliably to more complex requests. We trust that, like with any voice-operated electronic system, over time it will get easier to produce a wider range of commands that R2 consistently responds to. Until then, his movie-accurate look, the way he responds to simple commands, and the convenient beverage holder make him a fun comrade. What's in the Box
