This tutorial is for those of you who don't think you can draw a picture in CorelDRAW. All the objects in DANCING IN THE DARK IN THE PARK are symbols from CorelDRAW. I did this picture in CorelDRAW 7. Except for a few filter effects, this picture could be duplicated in any version of CorelDRAW back to at least CorelDRAW 4.
I have picked a group of the symbols to show you how this works. For those of you who don't have the symbols loaded on your computer, they can be found under the Font folder in the Control Panel. (Control Panel, Fonts, File, Install New Font, Change to your CD ROM Drive, insert your CorelDRAW disk with the fonts on it (usually disk 1) Fonts, Symbols, ttf). (Editor's Note: We have detailed instructions on how to work with all your fonts.)
We will be working with just the few items in the picture above right.
The image at left shows the symbol for a patio table. It can be found in the Symbols roll-up (or Docker). To get a symbol from the roll-up just drag it to your page. They come in quite small and I have enlarged these symbols slightly. When they first come up, they are all together in one piece. Corel has three creative ways of defining that! You can ungroup, break apart or separate them, depending on what you are working with. You need to Break Apart symbols before you can work with them. Most symbols are without any fill after you break them apart, but not always. Sometimes they are filled with white. Remember, you can't select an empty object unless you click on the line. (Editor's Note: You can select unfilled objects in CorelDRAW 6 and newer if you make this available in Tools Options.)
The table top was made a little larger so I could make the top of the umbrella look like it was going through the hole in the top of the table. I also selected the umbrella shade, without the knob on the top, and made it slightly wider. The table top is filled with a Radial Fountain Fill, the pole is filled with a Linear Fountain Custom Fill and the base is filled with a Linear Fountain Fill. The outline around the umbrella is one unit that is filled with a solid color. Many times when you are working with symbols, something like that will be on top of what you are working on when you add color, and you will need to put it to the back to have it give the effect of an outline. When you work with the table top, the top pole will have to be brought to the front to make it look like it is going through the table. The bottom of the top pole was rounded slightly. The inside of the umbrella is a Texture Fill, Style, Blended Edges. I will not be giving you the exact colors I used as my palette may be different from yours. See how easy it is to get started!
In the image at right, the chairs and the piano are found under Furniture in the Symbols roll-up. I sized the chairs to fit the patio table. I did one at a time and filled it with a Linear Fountain Fill. Then I duplicated the chair and moved it to the other side of the table.
The piano took a little effort to skew and to stretch it to fit under the table and chairs. Skew the piano -45 percent. It also took a bit of node editing in the corner. All the Symbols can be manipulated by editing the nodes. Figures 1 and 3 show the piano without the Lens effect. After I got further along in the picture I decided to put a Lens Effect on the whole piano. It was grouped and a Uniform Transparency Fill of 50% was added.
In the image at left, the vase is found under Awards in the Symbols roll-up and the flowers are under Plants. After I ungrouped the vase, I welded the bottom three pieces together and filled the center piece with a radial fill moving the center of the fill up a bit. I used Copy Properties From in the Edit Menu to fill the other pieces of the vase.
The flowers and the leaves were stretched and tweaked until they fit into the vase. It took a little node editing to get the leaves inside the vase. The flowers are filled with a Solid Fill and the leaves are a Linear Fountain Fill. You will notice that I have some of the petals in front of the vase while the stem is inside the vase. Sometimes you have to ungroup something like a flower to move a petal to the front. It's always a good idea to group something like a vase of flowers. If you are working in a complicated area, go into Wireframe view and you usually can group it there if you have had to ungroup it to make a change. I also put the rim around the top of the vase to the front before I grouped it. This vase of flowers is probably the most complicated thing in this picture.
The wine bottle and glasses in the image at right are found under Festive in the Symbols roll-up. The main thing I did to this group of Symbols was to move the two glasses down level with the bottom of the bottle. The bottle is a Linear Custom Fountain Fill and the other fills are a Solid Fill. I added the writing before grouping it again.
See, wasn't that easy? Here's a few more notes on the rest of the picture. The buildings were all extruded to give them a 3D feeling and some of them have a Texture Fill added to them. The road was made by welding two objects together and the curb is just a wider outline. The Statue of Liberty has a Layer Marble Texture Fill in her. I hit the Preview button a few times until I found the one I used. Her base is made from the bottom of the vase stretched out a bit. The couple is a Symbol from People that was solid black. I duplicated it, filled it with white and put it behind the black couple and slightly to the right. The picture needed something to brighten it up so I went wild with the cars! The spotlight from the star is a Lens Brighten Filter.
The ideas are endless for working with Symbols and all the Fills and textures that CorelDRAW provides.
