This is another of my tutorials for those of you who do not think you can draw a picture in CorelDRAW; however, you should have a working knowledge of CorelDRAW. All the objects in "Old MacHughking had a Farm" are Symbols from CorelDRAW except the fence posts, part of the bow and the window curtains. This drawing was done in CorelDRAW 7 and can be done in Version 6, 8 and 9. The knife tool was added in Version 6.

I have picked a group of the symbols to show you how this works. For those of you who don't have the symbols loaded on your computer, they can be found under the Font folder in the Control Panel. (Control Panel, Fonts, File, Install New Font, Change to your CD ROM Drive, insert your CorelDRAW disk with the fonts on it (usually disk 1) Fonts, Symbols, ttf). (Editor's Note: We have detailed instructions on how to work with all your fonts.)

We will be working with just the few items in the picture in Diagram 1. In Page Setup, change the page orientation to Landscape.

Let's start with Diagram 2. Remember that you have to Break Apart a Symbol before you can work on it. Some of you have seen this patio table before. It is found in the Symbol Roll-up or Docker. You can access the Symbols in the Tools menu for CorelDRAW 6-8 and the Window menu in CorelDRAW 9. Highlight the table and delete it. Do the same to the lower extension of the umbrella. Stretch the remaining pole down to the base and delete the inside sections of the umbrella. Using the Freehand tool, add lines to represent ribs on the umbrella and convert them to curves so they can be bent a bit. The fringe is made using the Natural Pen Tool (In CorelDRAW 6 use the Powerline command in the Effects menu and in CorelDRAW 9 use the Natural Media tool). Set the thickness to .20000 inches and check apply when drawing lines if you are using the Powerline command (only in CorelDRAW 6). Put a green background behind the umbrella so you can see the fringe better. Set the Natural Pen tool at Fixed Pressure and for the smallest amount. It is easier to make all the fringe pieces at one time. Then using the Wireframe you will be able to marquee them, fill them and take the outline off at the same time. Now group the fringe. Fill the umbrella and the stand with a Fountain Fill and group the umbrella.

Mirror the next three Symbols. The cat and the chicken are pretty simple. Add an eye to the cat and fill it with a Texture Fill called Exhaust Fumes! That particular Texture works very well for fur. Keep clicking the preview button until you get the look you like. You can see how well it worked on the horse. The chicken has a Radial Fountain Fill with the center moved to the left. Fill the inside of the potato basket with my Basket Weave Fill (see previous Tutorial) or a suitable color, and the potatoes with a Radial Fountain Fill.

In Diagram 3, I really thought the dog should have four legs! Adding two more legs is easy using the Knife Tool. Make a duplicate of the dog to use for "spare parts." Using the Knife Tool, cut each leg from the body. Then move the legs to the original dog and put To Back of the original dog. Adjust the legs until you think they look natural. This may require rotating them a little. Add an eye and the Exhaust Fume Fill. Group the dog.

Additional knife cuts are demonstrated in Diagram 4 (shown at right). Figure 1 of the girl is Symbol #43 in the People Symbol Library. Figure 2 shows where the cuts should be made. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE A DUPLICATE OF THE GIRL. In Figure 3 (within the image) the cut parts have been separated so you can see them as individual units. The girl's hair and face have been node edited and color added to the individual parts. With the Shape Tool selected, you can marquee around the girl's face and convert the nodes to curve all at one time. The same can be done with the hair. Cut the bow from the hair and add a little piece to make the bow look as if it goes around the hair. Then add the color to the other pieces. Your picture should look like Figure 4 (within the image). Next duplicate the arm and send To Back. Adjust the arm so it looks as if it is also holding the piece of paper. Now using your Shift key click on the shoe, leg and shorts and Group them. Duplicate them and send To Back. Using your Control key, you can node edit the shorts so they fit behind the front shorts. Finally add a few more red dots on the shirt and bow and give the girl an eye and you are finished. The girl should look like Figure 5 (within the image) without the flower on the piece of paper. The flower came from one of the flowers in the wagon. It is Plant #66. The hair is Texture Blend Horizontal. Group the girl.

Diagram 5 starts with a very simple table that is Extruded to make a funky looking farm table. After Extruding it, manipulate the pieces to make it fit right. Then add another node to the top and drag it down to make a tablecloth. It is filled with a Fiber Texture Fill. To add the shadow on the bottom side of the table cloth, duplicate the table cloth, delete the two back nodes, darken the color a bit and take off the outline. Group the table. Each of the vegetables gets Broken Apart, (you are remembering to Break Apart these Symbols-right?) and each one is colored and duplicated. On all the vegetables make the outlines as narrow as possible using the Outline Pen Dialog. Also check the Scale With Image boxes. If you need to make JPG files out of something as detailed as these vegetables, you might also want to check the Behind Fill box. After each vegetable is Broken Apart and colored, group each one again, duplicate them and arrange them on the table.

Diagram 6 shows some of the cows, Figure #51 in the Animal 2 Symbol library. Put a green background behind them so you can see them better. The Texture Fill called Cow Hide, Texture Fill Samples 5, looks like Figure 1. By changing the Contrast to 100 in the chart on the left in the Texture Fill, you will get a nice sharp Cow Hide. Figure 2. Each cow I made got a different pattern in its fill by just duplicating and clicking the Preview Button. The fact that they are all the same cow does not really matter. (This same Texture Fill is also available under Styles, Patches, 2C.) The goats got the same treatment. In this case the horns of one goat are cut off. The rest of the Symbols in the picture are done in much the same way. The pine trees are Plant Symbol #38 with more pieces added to them and node edited a bit. The window in the tractor is Combined with the tractor, which allows the boy to be seen. Treat the boy as you did the girl. The barn and silo came from two different Symbols. The house is Building Symbol # 40 with two more windows added to the first floor. The shingles on the buildings are from the Two Color Pattern Fill. The holes in the ladder are combined with the swing set so the objects in the background will show through the holes. The green grass is a Fountain Fill and a Textured Transparency of Noise Blended added on top.

The "creative spelling" of the title is so you will all pronounce my name right!
