In this tutorial I reworked my "Flowers for Foster" a bit and will show you how to add some Special Effects in Photo-Paint 9. For those of you who don't know it, there are Corel Newsgroups for the different versions of CorelDRAW. I am finding the Corel 9 Newsgroups very interesting to monitor, but I'll warn you, they put up a lot of messages! Editor's Note: We have links to the Newsgroups here on the Graphics Unleashed site.
I found out in the Photo-Paint 9 Newsgroup that the Impressionism brush in Photo-Paint 9 is not the same as the Impressionism brush in Photo-Paint 7. This means that the added instructions I gave for the Impressionism brush in "Symbols from Draw to Photo-Paint" will not give the exact same effects in Photo-Paint 9. You will get a stroke made up of many circles rather than parallel lines. Sorry about that!
For our new picture, add another flower from the Plant Symbols and fill it with some Fountain Fills of your choice. The result is shown in Flower 1. If you are unsure how to do this, refer back to my other articles. Then substitute the vase with a pitcher from the Household Symbols. Mirror it and fill it with the Aztec Cave Drawing from Samples 7 Texture Fills. Change the colors and preview it a few times to get a fill you like. I node edited mine a little bit. You'll see the symbol and the finished image in Pitcher 1. When you are finished, you should see something like Figure 1.
Group everything and convert the whole thing to a bitmap (Bitmap | Convert to Bitmap) with a Transparent Background. Another option would be to simply open the CDR file in Photo-Paint with a Transparent background. If you chose to do the conversion in Draw, copy and paste the bitmap into Photo-Paint. Fill the background with a light blue fill. You can use any color, I just prefer the blue as shown in Figure 2.
With the vase of flowers object active (a red line around the thumbnail on the Object Docker) in Photo-Paint 9, click on Effects | Art Strokes | Cubist. A dialog box will come up and give you an automatic preview of what the vase of flowers will look like with a Cubist effect. I just accepted the default numbers, but you can play with the sliders to get different effects. If you want to save this picture, do it now and close it.
If you copied the image from Draw, you should still have the original vase of flowers on the clipboard. If so, open a new page and paste it again as a new object. Otherwise, just reopen the CDR file. You can use the same blue fill or chose another color. This time select Effects | Art Strokes | Impressionism. Accept the defaults or change them if you wish. Again, save your file.
I picked nine different Effects to show you, but there are many more in there. Cubist, Impressionist, Pointillist and Watercolor are under Art Strokes. Kids Play, Stained Glass and Vignette are under Creative. Psychedelic is under Color Transform and Wet Paint is under Distort. Adjust the sliders and the numbers to get something that pleases you.
I took the image generated from the Vignette filter and made a card out of it using CorelDRAW 9's card layout. It made a nice Graduation card for my granddaughter.
In Figure 3 I added some painting touches to the picture using the Impressionism brush. It was here that I found that the brush had changed in Photo-Paint 9, but I used the brush anyway. I used the brush on the larger leaves to give them some texture. I also used the Effect brush and the Smear tool, the second tool on the Brush fly out, to smooth some of the lines. On the pitcher, I used the Contrast brush, which is also on the Effect Tool, to darken the outer edges. I then finished it off using the Image Sprayer tool, the last one on the Brush Flyout. There I chose the Sparkle brush. Play with the Size, Transparency and Dabs to get the exact effect you want.
Let's not forget the wonderful Scripts you can download from the Graphics Unleashed Web Site. I chose one of those to use for the title of this tutorial. There are complete instructions for downloading and using them on the Unleashed Web Site.
Remember that you can print these tutorials to make your work easier. You can also do these effects with a scanned photo instead of an original picture.
