The Format and Instructor

CorelDRAW Unleashed Boot Camp Instructor

All of our training is done "hands off" so that you're not constantly waiting on someone else to correct their errors. We use state-of-the-art equipment and project onto a giant screen thereby allowing the students at the back of the room to see as well as those in the front. It's just as if you were looking over our shoulder. All this adds up to the fact that you will get more information in a shorter period of time so you can put it to use the minute you get back to the office. We've done over sixty boot camps so we have a very good grasp of the information users need and do our very best to get that information to boot campers

All classes are taught by Foster D. Coburn III. Foster has authored nine best-selling books on CorelDRAW and has taught thousands of users how to get the most out of their graphics at hundreds of seminars held throughout the world and through this Web site.

Please let us know what you would like to learn and we will do our best to include what you want!

Testimonials

“In my opinion, your choice of topics and depth of exploration were exactly what I was looking for. Your presentation could not have been better. Your energy level just about knocked us out, but it kept me tracking for the entire three days. Well worth the cost!"”
Art Altenburg
—February 2006 Boot Camper

“You do a great job covering basics and still showing advanced users tips and tricks at the same time!”
—December 2002 Camper

“Can't tell you how many things I learned in Boot Camp that I use almost everyday...and I think I'm just scratching the surface of Corel's power. Hardly anyone I know or work with uses Corel, but I find it a powerhouse software. Thanks for being there and for all you do!”
Jim Luff
—December 2004 Boot Camper

“Having learned a tremendous amount of valuable information will allow me to design faster which translates to more projects, that translates to more profit.”
—December 2004 Camper

“From the 1st day it's been totally worth it!!!”
—February 2003 Camper

“Best training seminar I've ever attended. It's obvious that Foster is an authority on CorelDRAW and one of its biggest proponents. He was not afraid to point out its weaknesses, however. The real examples shown and his willingness to answer our questions about our own situations was very helpful.”
—September 2005 Camper

“Wish I had this years ago, would have saved hours and hours of time.”
—August 2005 Camper

“CorelDRAW 11 Unleashed Boot Camp was absolutely the best training I've had in 40 years.

I have attended a lot of professional training courses on various subjects over the past 40 years. Some of the courses were hands-on and some were lecture. Some were one day courses and some lasted as long as two weeks. None of the courses provided as much usable information as three days of CorelDRAW 11 Unleashed Boot Camp. The teaching method and visual aids were excellent. The full color handout is a great reference guide as well as a practice guide for exercises covered in class. Even though a vast amount of information was covered in a short period of time, it was presented in such a way that I was able to retain much of the information.

I struggled two years with CorelDRAW and was not able to scratch the surface of the product potential. CorelDRAW 11 Unleashed Boot Camp training turned the light on for me, showing the many ways to use the product. With the shortcuts I've learned, I can now do projects in less than half the time it took me previously.

Boot Camp is a must for CorelDRAW users regardless of the amount of Corel Draw experience.”

CorelDRAW Unleashed Boot Camp Agenda

This agenda is subject to change prior to the class as we are constantly updating the information presented to bring the best to you. We welcome your input for topics to be covered. Note that each day starts at 9 a.m. and ends around 4:30 p.m.

Day One—CorelDRAW

Creating Complex Shapes Easily: This session will go over the many techniques for using Weld, Intersect, Trim and Combine for creating complex shapes.

Font, Font Management & Typography: One of the best parts about CorelDRAW is that it comes with well over a thousand fonts. Unfortunately many users aren’t sure how to manage all those fonts without wreaking havoc with their computer. This session will teach you all about fonts and how to have all your fonts available without any problems.

ROMCat: You'll be introduced to ROMCat, the best tool for finding CorelDRAW clip art images.

Color, Fills and Color Management: Process color, Spot color, pattern fills, texture fills and ICC profiles. These are just a few of the many things covered in this session. By the time we're done, you'll know about the many different types of fills, the best way to use them and the tricks for getting colors to match from screen to printer. For those who want bright pretty colors, you'll see how they can be printed and reasons why they don't print in some situations.

Enveloping, Distortion and Bevels: We’ll cover all the different ways to use Envelopes to warp objects and then go over further distortions with the Interactive Distortion tool. You'll also see the new Bevel tool added in CorelDRAW X3.

Fitting Text to a Path: This is one of the most used effects in CorelDRAW and also one of the most frustrating to many users. After this session you’ll know the exact steps to do it right the first time, every time.

Artistic Media: Learn about the different Artistic Media Brushes and how they can add some amazing flair to your projects.

Automation and Customization: You'll see how easy it is for all levels of users to record simple macros and put the macros into use. This includes some of the macros that are included with CorelDRAW and with CorelDRAW X4 Unleashed. Now that you have automated many tasks, you'll see how to customize CorelDRAW so it works best for your workflow.

Quick Tips: We end the day with a bang as you get a rapid fire list of tips that will take you to the next level.

Day Two—Corel PHOTO-PAINT

Masking Basics: Masks are the key to getting the most out of Corel PHOTO-PAINT. This session will take you through the wide array of masking tools. You'll also see various ways to modify your image once it has been masked.

Working with Objects: While masks are incredibly useful, often they will be the basis for creating a floating object. Once you have an object, there are all kinds of options for further manipulation. We'll talk about opacity, clip masks, merge modes, lens, clip to parent, object transparency and more!

Scanning: Very few images are created completely from scratch. Many of them are scanned in from a print. What type of scanner do you need? What settings should you use? Just exactly what resolution should you use? What are the quickest ways to improve those images? These questions and many more will be answered.

Processing RAW Images: To get the best images from a digital camera, you'll need to shoot in RAW format. You'll learn various ways to process those images for adjustment in Corel PHOTO-PAINT.

Fixing Digital Photos: The explosion of digital cameras means that there are even more photos residing on computers that need to be fixed. In this session we'll go over ways to resample images to the correct size, adjust the color until it is just right, we'll remove red eye and even help the photo's subject lose a few pounds.

Automating Your Workflow: Oftentimes you'll have repetitive tasks that need to be applied to a large number of images. This session will first show you how easy it is to create a script that performs a series of steps. Then you'll see how easy it is to apply that script to a large number of images all at the same time.

Web Graphics: The vast majority of images on the Web are saved as some sort of a bitmap. We'll talk about JPEGs, GIFs, PNGs and ways to optimize in each format. You'll also learn the tricks for creating an image map or slicing an image to optimize it for download. Once we have the bitmaps all covered, we'll talk about exporting to SWF format for getting vectors on the Web.

Day Three—Advanced Topics

Corel PowerTRACE: Learn how to use Corel PowerTRACE effectively and the times when no automated tracing software will work.

Converting a Scanned Logo to Vector: Sometimes clients just can't help but make your life miserable. They think a great way to supply a logo is as a tiny little thing on their business card. Or maybe they've downloaded the logo from their Web site. This session will show you the best method to convert that crummy bitmap logo into a fully-scalable vector logo.

Importing and Exporting Files: A big strength of CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT is the huge number of file formats you can import and export. This session will introduce you to the most used formats and how best to use them. And there are some formats you'll learn should be avoided in many cases.

Outputting Your Artwork: If it doesn't print, it's just a video game! Sure, more artwork these days is destined for a computer screen. But the majority is still headed for a piece of paper. This session covers the many settings in the Print dialog box so that you can get the best output from anything from an inkjet to an imagesetter.

Imposition and Print Merge: Do you need to repeat the same design numerous times on one "page" of output? Imposition makes this process, and much more, very easy. When combined with Print Merge, you have the power to create large amounts of customized artwork in no time!

Publishing to PDF: PDF files are everywhere. They are one of the best ways to provide artwork to printers and a great way to put files on the Web. We'll go over the details of Publishing a PDF file directly from CorelDRAW and the options for doing it using Adobe Acrobat.

Q & A: We'll finish up with a session dedicated to your questions. While we think that many will have already been answered, we save this session to answer questions that weren't covered earlier in the Boot Camp.
